Bike Registration
The bike registration program was developed for two purposes:
(1) To provide the community with a vital crime prevention tool, and
(2) it is a requirement of law to register all mountain bikes in the District.
The benefits of bike registration is that is can effectively assist in reducing theft on campus for the following reasons:
* Registered bikes are difficult to sell and therefore are less likely to be stolen.
* Registered bikes contribute to a higher rate of conviction for those apprehended with it in their possession.
* Registered bikes make it easier for law enforcement officials to return it to the rightful owner if it is lost or stolen.
How to Register Your Bike
Students and employees should bring their bicycles and proof of purchase to Woodhull House where a trained bike patrol officer will engrave the District of Columbia registration number on the bottom of the down tube. A District registration sticker and a George Washington University registration sticker will then be applied to the bike. The officer will fill out the registration form and give the student a copy of that form as well as the Payer's Receipt. These records should be kept in a safe place for future reference. The cost of this service is $2.00.
If a bike is stolen, the student should contact UPD immediately to file a theft report.
