How can I become a Facilitator?
For Graduate Students, Staff, and Faculty:
Attend A Training! The ideal person for facilitator training has previous leadership experience in team building, outdoor education, group facilitating, or group dynamics, though this is not required. Becoming a facilitator consists of a thorough two-day training in which you and a group of others will experience all eleven SUMMIT elements. In addition to learning about the elements and their safety considerations, you will learn how to lead different types of groups through the course. At the end of the two days you will be certified to lead groups on the SUMMIT. To maintain certification it is imperative that you facilitate at least one session each semester.
***We do not have a date confirmed for our next training. If you would like to be put on our list of interested facilitators, email summit@gwu.edu.***
For Undergraduate Students: Take A Class! We offer a 2-credit course (listed under Exercise Science Activities) called Introduction to Low Ropes Facilitation. Students enrolled in this class will engage in a hands-on experience, develop effective and efficient facilitation techniques, and learn about group dynamics and leadership development.
For more information about the class click here. The class will be offered in Spring 2010. Please check the schedule of classes for information about when it will be offered.
* For students who have extensive leadership and facilitation experience and wish to forgo the class, experience with team building, outdoor education, group facilitating, or group dynamics (i.e. camp counselor, trip leader, etc.) is required. Reference information will need to be provided to verify that the past experience is applicable and is an appropriate substitute for the knowledge and experience provided in the Introduction to Low Ropes Facilitation course (see above for course description).
