Configure for IMAP

IMAP, "Internet Mail Application Protocol", allows you to read your mail from multiple computers without transferring any files or messages. Getting your email via IMAP is especially handy when you use several computers or if you travel a lot.

Section 1: Enabling IMAP in GWMail

Step 1: In the upper right corner of the GWMail interface click on Settings.

Step 2: From the Settings Window click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.




Step 3: You will be adjusting the settings in the IMAP Access section.



Step 4: Select Enable IMAP.



Step 6: Click on Save Changes.  If you return to Forwarding and POP/IMAP under Settings you will see the Status is now IMAP is enabled.  You are now ready to setup an email client to retrieve your GWMail using IMAP.



Section 2: Setting up your Email Client for IMAP

Step 1: If you are not already in Forwarding and POP/IMAP under Settings, please follow the instructions in Section 1 - Step 1of this page to get there.

Step 2: In the IMAP Access section click on Configuration instructions.




Step 3: This link will take you to the Help Center page for supported IMAP clients.  Select your Mail Client from the list for setup instructions.



Step 4: The page you are taken to will be customized based on the Mail Client you select.  In the example pictured below we are using Thunderbird, however whichever client you choose the page will look similar.  Under the Quick Answers click on the Google Apps link.  You will follow instructions for Google Apps when setting up your Email Client.  There will also be reference to Google Apps users in the instructions like in number 5 in the picture below.

Note: As in step 5 the example shows username@your_domain.com, for GWMail that would be net_id@gwmail.gwu.edu
