STS can only offer full support for machines that meet these recommended configurations. See the Networking FAQ for more details.
What do students need to use the network?
- A computer with a built in 10/100BaseT ethernet network port or an installed 10/100BaseT ethernet network card.
- A STS-issued Media Converter or LRE (depending on residence hall).
What computers, operating systems and network cards are supported?
- PC: Pentium-class or comparable processor (Celeron, Athlon, etc.), 256MB RAM, 20GB hard disk, CD or DVD-ROM, 10/100Base T Ethernet card,
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Professional version is recommended, but not
required) or Windows Vista SP1 operating system
- Mac: PowerPC G4 or Intel processor, 1.25Ghz processor or higher, 256MB RAM, 20 GB hard disk, CD or DVD-ROM, 10/100 Base T Ethernet card, Mac OS X 10.3 and above operating system
*Please note that regardless of platform, a 10/100 Base T Ethernet card is required to connect to the campus network.*
Recommended minimum configurations for a new computer:
- PC: Modern Intel or AMD Processor, 1.0GB RAM, 40GB hard disk, CD or DVD-ROM, 10/100Base T Ethernet card,
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Professional version is recommended, but not
required) or Windows Vista SP1 operating system. Users will be required to
install all critical operating system updates, GW-provided Symantec
Antivirus software, and antispyware software.
- Mac: Modern IBM PowerPC or Intel processor, 1.0GB RAM, 40 GB hard disk, CD or DVD-ROM, 10/100 Base T Ethernet card, Mac OS X 10.3 and above operating system.
