Networking Frequently Asked Question

1. What is a network connection?

It is a fast way to connect to other computers, do research, communicate with the entire world, access remote services and share ideas. A network connection is provided for each student living in a wired residence hall room.

2. Which buildings offer ResNet service?

Follow this link to view the Technology Guide.[pdf]

3. Why purchase an ethernet card?

In order to access ResNet, an ethernet card is necessary to access a network connection. Eliminating the use of a modem will free phone lines in each wired residence hall room. There is never a busy signal when using a direct network connection!

4. What do summer interns and students need to use the network?
  • A computer with a built in 10/100BaseT network port or an installed 10/100BaseT network card (a.k.a. ethernet card).
  • A media converter or LRE depending on your residence hall assignment. Equipment is available for sign-out from STS, located in City Hall (950 24th Street, NW).
5. What computers are supported?

Minimum requirements for existing technology:
  • PC: Pentium class or comparable processor (Celeron, Athlon, etc.), 64MB RAM and a 8GB hard disk, CD or DVD-ROM, 10/100 Base T Ethernet card, Windows  XP or 2000 operating system.

6. How do summer interns and students get a connection?

ResNet service is included for all summer residents who reside on campus for more than 21 days. Simply visit the STS office in City Hall during normal operating hours to pick up the equipment you need, our staff will register you for service, which should be active in two or less business days. You will be provided clear and easy instructions for setup. There is a daily charge for stays for less than 21 days, for assistance please contact STS by e-mail at sts@gwu.edu.

Should a student experience difficulty in establishing their connection, technical support is available via the STS Hotline at 202-994-7041. STS technicians will troubleshoot the connection over the phone and if necessary, schedule an appointment for the student. The student must be present while a STS technician provides in-room assistance. There is no charge for technical support.

7. What operating systems are supported by STS?

  • Mac OS X
