Meningococcal Vaccination Recommendation
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends routine vaccination of young adolescents and college freshmen with a newly licensed meningococcal vaccine called Menactra. http://www.cdc.gov/nip/vaccine/mening/mcv4/mcv4_acip.htm
About the Menactra Vaccination
Menactra is designed to provide protection for eight years - almost doubling the duration of protection provided by the currently used vaccine (Menomune). It also prevents transmission of the meningococcal bacteria.
What is Meningococal Meningitis?
Meningococcal meningitis is caused by bacteria that infect the bloodstream and lining of the brain and spinal cord. In the US, 1,400-2,800 cases are reported each year. It is a serious disease that kills about 300 people annually. College freshmen living in resident halls are at higher risk as compared to other people their age.
How to Obtain the Menactra Vaccination
The Menactra vaccine is safe and effective. Availability of the vaccine may be limited because of the recent licensure. Please contact your family physician or Student Health (202-994-6827) for information and availability. Students curently living in resident halls who were previously vaccinated with Menomune do not need to be revaccinated unless three years have passed.
