Strategic Plan for Academic Excellence
Academic Vision
The Academic Vision is that GW become one of the preeminent urban research universities in the nation and the world, recognized for its excellence in selected areas that are primariliy derived from existing programmatic strengths in teaching, scholarship, and externall funded research across the disciplines. The vision derives from society's need for continuing scientific discovery, application of technology, and synthesis of information to create new understanding of and solution to, human societal problems.
Academic Mission
The academic mission is to provide students and faculty with the optimal environment for the creation, acquisition, and dissemination of knowledge and the pursuit of creative endeavors to meet the needs and enrich the experiences of the global society.
Fundamental Areas of Focus
The pursuit of strategic goals will be guided by a committment to three fundamental areas of focus:
1. Raising the level of academic excellence for which GW is already recognized.
2. Gaining a unique position in the higher education marketplace.
3. Achieving a high level of operational excellence in all areas of GW.
Goals for Achieving GW's Academic Vision
Move GW solidly into the ranks of the first-tier educational institutions through quality undergraduate education and selected top-ranked graduate programs, especially at the doctoral level.
Solidify, strengthen, and strategically expand graduate professional education including programs that meet the needs of mid-careerand continuously learning audiences.
Move GW into the ranks of the top-tier research institutions through continued and enhanced facilitation of faculty scholarship and research growth.
Continue to develop a strong sense of community.
Strenghten GW's infrastructure, including the University's libraries, technology resources, and business and service operations, to support excellence in the academic excellence.
The University's strategic plan includes a comprehensive writing program, increased graduate assistant support, identified areas of academic excellence, and an improved business and service model all with the purpose of moving GW toward the goal of becoming a preeminent urban research university in the nation and the world.
Every member of the University Commity is dedicated on helping GW achieve the complete set of metrics and goals contained in the full copy of the Academic Strategic Plan, which are available for review.
This plan will guide the work of each division, particularly in Student and Academic Support Services, as we strive to help students achieve the metrics which are stated in the strategic plan.
