Who to tell if you're sexually assaulted?

Deciding whom to speak with after a sexual assault can be difficult and frightening. The first step in the healing process is usually seeking support from trained professionals or a trusted friend. Several organizations, both on and off campus, provide specialized services to survivors of sexual assault.

Sexual Assault Crisis Consultation Team
(202) 994-SACC (7222)

The 24-hour Sexual Assault Crisis Consultation Team provides survivors with information and resources in order to make informed decisions regarding the assault. Information provided includes: assisting the survivor in identifying her/his medical, counseling and academic assistance needs; identifying appropriate campus and/or community services to provide necessary assistance; explaining options such as filing police reports; and, reviewing disciplinary options available through Student Judicial Services.

The University Counseling Center (994-5300) is located at 2033 K Street, N.W. Suite 330. Counselors can provide confidential support for you during this difficult period. They can inform you of common emotional reactions to this crisis and discuss coping methods that may assist you immediately following the assault and later. Talking about your concerns with a counselor in a safe, supportive environment may help you sort through your feelings and decide what to do. You do not need to disclose your name if you call the Counseling Center for information. Counselors will not reveal your identity to anyone without your permission. Students may be seen on an emergency walk-in basis or by appointment. Assistance and support for dealing with personal and academic issues is also available from the Dean of Students Office (Rice Hall 401, 994-6710) or from your school/college Dean's office.
