Risk Reduction Strategies

  • Avoid alcohol and other drugs.  If you do drink, avoid intoxication.  Anyone is more vulnerable to exploitation when they drink or take other drugs.

  • Think carefully before leaving a party with someone you don't know well.  If you choose to leave, tell someone where you're going and with whom; perhaps, suggest they check on you.

  • Stay with others whenever possible.

  • Be wary of unusual behaviors in people you are dating such as manipulation, viewing women as objects, constant anger or extreme role identification.

  • If you are attacked, try using extreme verbal aggression as a defense, such as screaming, swearing, and name-calling.  Passive aggression such as vomiting, urinating or telling the rapist you are diseased may also work as a deterrent.

  • Trust your instincts.  If you believe you are in danger, run to a lighted building and yell "fire" (not "rape").

  • Be realistic.  If your life is in danger, do whatever it takes to save your life.
