To help you better-prepare yourself for the backcountry, TRAiLS has put together a suggested gear list.  Although not all of this gear will be applicable to every trip (i.e., you usually don't need a sleeping bag for just a day hike!), we recommend that you consult this list when planning to attend any TRAiLS outing!

EQUIPMENT

Sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillow, water bottle (two for hiking), small bowl/plate like tupperware, cup to hold hot liquids like a travel mug, spoon and fork, small backpack for use during day hikes, head lamp,
sunglasses (ideally with strap/krokies), wristwatch, journal, photo ID, money for snacks, plastic trash bag for wet clothing.

CLOTHING

Rain jacket (waterproof is better than water resistant), heavy-weight fleece or wool sweater, non-cotton long underwear (top and bottom), t-shirt (non-cotton is best), warm hat & gloves, hiking shorts (quick-drying nylon), long pants (nylon or warm-up style is best), warm casual clothing for around the campfire.

FOOTWEAR

Socks (synthetic) for hiking, hiking boots/shoes, moleskin for treating blisters, one pair of sturdy, strap-on sandals for rafting (no flip-flops!).

TOILETRIES

Sunscreen, insect repellent, contact lens solution, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, prescription medications.

OPTIONAL ITEMS

Pocket knife, visor/baseball cap, gaiters, bandana, camera/film, book, playing cards, folding camp chair, musical instruments.
