MLK Day of Service

A Day On, Not a Day Off

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Planning Committee would like to extend our thanks to all of the participants and team leaders who made the project a success.
On the Day of Service, we painted a total of 15 classrooms and 4 bathrooms at Anacostia High School!  In addition, our volunteers were able to conduct a health fair for the community, with special help from ISCOPES.

We would also like to thank all of the organizations who helped sponsor the event:

What is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service?
It is a day to honor Dr. King's legacy of compassion and empowerment by serving the Washington D.C. community with your fellow GW students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

How can I participate?

You can either participate as a Participant or as a Team Leader.

What do we do on MLK Day of Service?
Please see below for a tentative agenda of the event:

  • Registration & Check-in (11:00am in the Marvin Center Grand Ballroom)
  • Lunch program with speakers (complimentary lunch will be provided)
  • Transportation to and orientation to the service site, which is Anacostia High School
  • Perform community service, which includes school beautification, repairs, and some health screenings (medical students)
  • Reflection and transportation back to campus
  • *Please note that we will attempt to get back to campus by 5:00pm.  However, because of the fact that Inauguration is the day following MLK Day, traffic and road closing may have a significant impact on the amount of time it takes to get to and from the service site.  Thank you for your patience!

 Dr. King's Passion for Service:

During his lifetime, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked tirelessly for  his vision of a nation of freedom and equality. He inspired people to fight against injustice of all kinds, once saying: “Life’s persistent and most urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Dr. King valued strong communities, the empowerment of individuals, and striving for common goals.

"Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" to serve. You don't have to know the Second Theory of Thermal Dynamics in Physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love, and you can be that servant."-   Excerpted from "The Drum Major Instinct", a sermon by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1968.

Coretta Scott King on the Meaning of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

"The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example -- the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King's character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit."
