Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

MLK DAY OF SERVICE

"A Day On, Not a Day Off"

"Everybody can be great because everybody can serve."
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

      Monday, January 21st, 2008
11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Meet in Columbian Square, Marvin Center

We want to thank the students who volunteered their time and energy for MLK Day of Service.  We would also like to thank Community for Creative Non-violence (CCNV) for hosting over 200 GW students.

What is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service?
  • It is a day to honor Dr. King's legacy of compassion and empowerment by serving the Washington D.C. community with your fellow GW students.
  •  If you want to volunteer for MLK Day, you will need to meet at Columbian Square in the Marvin Center by 11:00am on Monday, 21 January 2008.  You will meet the group of people with whom you'll volunteer for the day, hear some great speeches, get a T-shirt, and eat a free lunch.  Then we'll take the Metro to CCNV (Community for Creative Non-Violence), which is a homeless shelter in Washington D.C.  You will finish volunteering and reflection time by 4:00pm.

Why Serve?
  • Celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, one of the world's foremost civil rights leaders, by contributing to his goal of "making America what it ought to be." Dr. King's believed that every individual has a responsibility to his or her community. We at OCS strive to honor Dr. King's memory with a "Day On" rather than a "Day Off", and we hope you will be moved to join us in serving the D.C. community.

 Dr. King's Passion for Service:

  • During his lifetime, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked tirelessly for  his vision of a nation of freedom and equality. He inspired people to fight against injustice of all kinds, once saying: “Life’s persistent and most urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Dr. King valued strong communities, the empowerment of individuals, and striving for common goals.
  • "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" to serve. You don't have to know the Second Theory of Thermal Dynamics in Physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love, and you can be that servant."-   Excerpted from "The Drum Major Instinct", a sermon by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1968.

Coretta Scott King on the Meaning of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

  • "The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example -- the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King's character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit."
