Adopt-A-Family Program

February 9, 2009

Thank you to everyone who participated in Adopt-A-Family 2008! Together, we adopted over 530 individuals and 150 families!

We look forward to working with you again next year!

What is Adopt-A-Family?

  • An annual tradition at GWU to provide families in need with gifts of clothing, household necessities, and toys, sponsored by the Office of Community Service and by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Mu Beta Chapter.

Who can adopt?

  • Anyone! Departments, student organizations, individuals, community members, and more!

How can I sign up to adopt a family?

The Adopt-A-Family program will begin registering interested donors starting in the fall of 2009! Please check back for more information as the season approaches.

Is there a deadline to sign up?

  • The deadline to adopt a family has already passed, but please see the above information about ways to give to families through Transitional Housing Corporation.  Those gifts just have to be dropped off at the general gift drop-off.

Who are the families in need?

  • Families are identified by DC social services agencies, including Academy of Hope, CentroNia, the Latin American Youth Center, Transitional Housing Corporation, and the Salvation Army.

How does the program work?

  • Step 1: Fill out our new online sign-up form.
  • Step 2: We will email you information about the people you "adopted" as soon as we can after you sign-up. Our goal is to tell everyone their families by Wednesday, 26 November at the latest, though we cannot guarantee that date. However, we will try to get you your family information much sooner than that, if possible. You can help us by signing up as early as possible!
  • Step 3: Drop off your fully wrapped gifts to us!
    • Location: Marvin Center Grand Ballroom (800 21st Street NW, 3rd floor, Washington, D.C.)
    • Date: Wednesday, 10 December 2008
    • Time: 8:00am-1:00pm (no exceptions)
  • Step 4: The community partner sites will pick up the gifts and take them to the families in need.

What are the gift giving guidelines?

  • To promote equity, we ask that you spend $60 on each person you are adopting. In order to alleviate the financial burden, feel free to enlist the help of your classmates and colleagues!
  • With this $60, we ask that you purchase gifts that abide by the guideline of:
    • Adults: 1 household, 1 clothing, and 1 fun item
    • Children: 1 educational, 1 clothing, and 1 fun item

For gift suggestions, please follow this link!

Why are there gift giving guidelines?

  • Many families open gifts in front of each other, so it is important that they are receiving reasonably equal gifts.
  • Adults need warm clothing and gifts just as much as children do, so we want to ensure that every person receives an equal amount and value of gifts.
  • We want to help the donors determine how many people they can adopt so that they do not have to guess.
