For Faculty & Staff

We are expanding service and experiential learning opportunities to better meet the needs of both the GW and greater Washington D.C. communities. It is our vision for GW faculty and staff to utilize service as a teaching tool that enables students to connect what they are learning in the classroom to actual experiences working in the community.

In order to actualize this goal, we need your help. Below are some opportunities for you, as GW faculty and staff, to strengthen the learning opportunities at GW. You will be helping us make a difference by allowing us to utilize your expertise to make this connection from classroom to community.

How can you help us help you? - Contact OCS and let us know how we can better serve you. Some questions to get you started may be the following: What is your interest level in service? (Are you interested in letting students know about ongoing service opportunities, one-time service events (walks, clothing drives, etc.), service-learning, etc.) What community issues are we not addressing through our current partnerships? How we can make it easier for you to integrate service with your students' classroom experience? You can also share your expertise on an issue area with OCS. We regularly hold panels throughout the year on a range of topics from civic engagement, HIV/AIDS awareness, to the state of homelessness. We would love faculty representation on our panels. Just email or call our office and let us know what area you are well versed in.

Other ways that we can serve you - Contact us and request that an OCS staff person come to your class and make a short presentation about service and the variety of service opportunities in the DC area. We can cater this presentation to focus on an issue area related to your students' course work. - Provide consultation on how Service-Learning can be integrated into your syllabus and required course work. For example, if you teach a technology based course, you can have your students apply their course work by volunteering at a local non-profit agency and designing a database system that meets the agency's needs.
