PROGRAM SPECIFICS:

What is Federal Work Study?

  • Federal Work Study (FWS) is a federally-funded work program for students to earn wages during college while working for nonprofits, educational institutions, government and community service employers.

Do I have to have Work-Study to tutor?

  • DC Reads tutoring jobs are primarily used by FWS students. The FWS Award is part of your financial aid package and is awarded by the Financial Aid Office.
  • If you do not have a Work-Study award you may volunteer with the DC Reads Program but will not be paid.  However, preference is given to FWS eligible students.

How many hours do DC Reads tutors work?

  • Most DC Reads tutors work 4-8 hours per week. Tutors can work a maximum of 20 hours per week.  Most programs want tutors to commit to two days per week. Some supervisors may accept a one day per week commitment.

Can I work for more than one DC Reads program?

  • NO.  Work study students may only work for one DC Reads program at a time.  Be sure to choose a program that will give you the number of hours you want.  You may work a second job as long as it is not a Federal Work-Study job.

How do I get to my tutoring program?

Do I need tutoring experience?

  • Most programs do not require previous experience. The programs that require experience will make that clear in advertising. All DC Reads employers provide training before tutoring begins.  Training is mandatory and will be paid.

Can I switch programs during the semester?

  • No. You must make a semester-long commitment to one DC Reads program.  You may switch to a different program at the beginning of the following semester.
