DC Reads
at The George Washington University

History:

DC Reads is part of the America Reads Challenge started in 1997 by the Clinton Administration with one main goal in mind:  to have all children reading by the end of the 3rd grade.  The Administration felt that in order to reach this goal it was critical to incorporate all parts of the community (e.g. teachers, school administrators, families, and other community members).  Today, in an effort to get the community involved, the Federal Government commits federal work study dollars each year to pay college students an hourly wage to serve as tutors in local schools.

Program Description:

DC Reads tutors spend several hours each week working one-on-one or in small groups with children. They tutor in local elementary schools either during the school day or in after-school programs within the District of Columbia. Tutors make a positive difference in the lives of children by improving their academic skills and as positive role models. Tutors share experiences and gain knowledge about various issues in the educational realm during monthly reflection meetings with others from their tutoring site.
