Safer Sex
As the incidence of Sexually Transmitted Infections are increasing in the U.S.;
especially among college students, one must use protection.
Hormonal contraceptives such as birth control do not
prevent the spread of STIs. The only effective methods are as
follows:
Condoms
A male condom is a very
effective method for preventing STIs and pregnancy when used
correctly. Male condoms are available in a variety of styles,
sizes, colors, material, and textures. Male condoms are available at
most health stores and are cheap.
At Student Health Services we offer condoms
for $5 for a package of ten condoms. It is always best to think ahead
and buy a box and keep them on hand, responsibility is the best means
for protection.
Female condoms are also a
means of protection for STIs and pregnancy. Female condoms are not as
readily available as male condoms and there is only 1 female condom
currently available. However, female condoms are 95% effective in preventing
pregnancy and almost as effective against STIs as a male condom.
Women should also be responsible and have a box of condoms on hand as well. One never knows when he/she will need them.
Dental Dams
Dental dams are a piece
of latex big enough to help cover the vagina during cunnilingus. Dental
dams prevent direct mouth to vaginal contact, thus preventing the
spread of infections. One opens the dental dam to cover the entire
vaginal area for protection.
