The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA)

The federal Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) mandates that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) take steps to block the sharing of or remove from their systems unauthorized duplicates of copyrighted materials. DMCA states that an ISP's failure to comply can result in the ISP being held liable for all copyright infringement using the ISP's systems. For most students, faculty, and staff, GW serves as an ISP. This is particularly true for students living in University residence halls. As such, the University must comply with federal law and take reasonable steps to prevent GW students from engaging in copyright infringement.
