During his lifetime, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked tirelessly for his vision of a nation of freedom and equality. He inspired people to fight against injustice of all kinds, once saying: "Life's persistent and most urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" Dr. King valued strong communities, the empowerment of individuals, and striving for common goals.
"Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" to serve. You don't have to know the Second Theory of Thermal Dynamics in Physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love, and you can be that servant."- Excerpted from "The Drum Major Instinct", a sermon by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1968.
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's legacy of compassion and empowerment, we welcome you to be a part of service within the Washington D.C. community alongside your fellow GW students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
