Students participating in the Office of Community Service's Alternative Breaks Trip to Galveston, Texas met with Congressman Ron Paul to discuss their upcoming trip to a part of his congressional district.
Jesse Regis, participant, explained that meeting with Congressman Paul was a part of their pre-departure educational activities. Congressman Paul provided information on the city's culture, the status of the rebuilding efforts, and restaurants to eat in while there. Jesse Regis emphasized that meeting with Congressman Paul put the Alternative Breaks trip to Galveston into perspective. He stated, "we're traveling to Galveston this winter to help our fellow citizens recover from Hurricane Ike, but we know we can not change the city in a week... there are so many things that were affected by Ike, it will take a community to rebuild the community. Reconstruction is a process and something that requires the help of residents, students and elected officials...it's something bigger than any one of us - Congressman Paul helped us to realize that."
Galveston, Texas is just one of thirteen trips seeking to make a difference and give back to both national and international communities. If you are interested in supporting the Alternative Breaks Program, please send your tax-deductible donation to:
