Timothy Kane, Director of the Office of Community Service at the George Washington University authored an article examining the benefits of collaboration with the international community, emphasizing the need to engage in dialogue about service-learning. He explains that the international community can greatly benefit from utilizing existing service-learning resources, expertises, and perspectives found at Universities and Colleges around the country. In his remarks, Dr. Knapp said the class of 2013 exemplified what it means to be "in and of the community." A few weeks ago, I arrived at GW, timid and nervous. I moved in early for a volunteer program called Communities Building Communities (CBC). It was a one-of-a-kind experience for countless reasons. Moving in early was a bonus. For those considering GW, I can assure you the dorms are palatial regardless of the building in which you choose to live. Another advantage to the program was that I had the opportunity to meet amazing people who are devoted to community service and eager to embark on an amazing new chapter of their lives at GW. The George Washington University was recognized on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for General Service
GWU, through the Office of Community Service, allocates more than 15% of its Federal Work-Study funds for community Service. This is three times more than the 7% federal mandate. Work-Study students use their awards while participating in OCS Programs: DC Reads and Jumpstart.
The Washington Monthly College Guide ranked GWU fourth in the country among all colleges and universities dedicated to civic engagement
This years annual Make a Difference Day was an outstanding success being awarded the Excellence Award for Outstanding Community Service for bringing in volunteers from all across the metro area and on campus to participate in community service.
In honor of 10 years of outstanding service to the District of Columbia, the DC City Council passed a resolution honoring the Neighbors Project by passing the resolution for Neighbors Project Day. Read the full article
