    Black Heritage Celebration 2012

The George Washington University celebrates Black History Month in February under the title "Black Heritage Celebration (BHC)"  with academic, cultural, diversity, and collaborative programs coordinated by the Multi Cultural Student Services Center, and produced by:  the BHC Committee, Faculty, Staff, Student Organizations, Africana Studies, the Theater and Dance Department; the Black Student Union; the GW NAACP; the African Student Association; the Caribbean Student Association; the National Society of Black Engineers; the Black Men's Initiative; the Black Woman's Forum; The Organization of Latino American Students, Word Up Bible Study, The Voice Gospel Choir, the Minority Business Student Association; and the Multi Cultural Greek Community.

The first GW Black History Month celebration occurred in 1968 coinciding with the introduction of the original Black Student Union, then known as the Black Peoples Union (BPU).  The BPU was the center for minority student life for may years, providing the foundation for GW's continued commitment to diversity and inclusion that we experience today.  We have the broadest range of participants involved in supporting the growth of cultural education programming, and the development of cultural competence throughout our university community.

This year's theme "Bleeding Black" is meant to evoke discussions about the continuing struggles and triumphs of people of African descent in the Americas.  The events inspired by this theme will stimulate a number of complex conversations including: the formulation of Black masculinity; AfroLatinidad or the relationship between Africa and Latin America and Pan-African identity in different Latino communities; the role of art and performance in Blackness; social activism; and the role of
    love in film and society.

Our events will uplift and celebrate the Motherland as we welcome the
South Africa Project in addition to the African Student Association's Annual Taste of Africa.  Everyone attending gets a little bit of everything, traditional African culture, dance, fashion, music, and food!  We look forward to sharing this wonderful campus wide celebration with you!

On February 1st, 2012 at 6:30pm Black Heritage Celebration 2012 will kickoff with the *Keynote Address given by poet Sonia Sanchez, Special Guest performances from GW's own
Elizabeth Acevedo, and The Voice Gospel Choir.  Sanchez was recently named Philadelphia's first Poet Laureate.  If you enjoyed the MLK Award Celebration, you don't want to miss this exciting and thought provoking event!
