MissionThe Global Language Network is a non-profit, official student organization of The George Washington University (GW). It was founded by Andrew Brown in September, 2005, in effort to develop cooperation within the community through the education of international languages and cultures.

Breaking down the language and culture barriers is the first and most important step to bringing people together around the world. Our mission is that by teaching individuals, we facilitate the development of their communities with an overriding commitment to international communication and understanding.

One important objective of the Group is to help the community see far beyond language barriers and put foreign languages to a practical, cultural use from which individuals can truly benefit. In effort to help bridge the gap between cultures, native speakers teach free language and culture classes every day for an hour.

Classes are made easy to follow by our use of lesson plans and exercises. All lesson plans and exercises are available online and can be downloaded from our website. This enables students to follow the classes consistently, especially if they miss lessons or need extra practice at home.

The organization offers over 100 free and intensive classes in 45 different languages. In addition to supplementing the University’s instruction of common languages, the Network teaches more exotic and uncommon languages that are rarely taught at any language institute or university in the United States.

In its first academic year, the organization quickly grew to a membership of nearly 3,000. The majority of the members are GW students, staff, and faculty, but there are also many members from the DC community, as the GLN-GW opened its programs to the public in April, 2006. The overwhelming membership size in such short time is clear proof of the importance of foreign languages and cultures and their place in the GW and DC community.

At The George Washington University Excellence Awards ceremony in April, 2006, Global Languages (the original name of the organization) received six nominations. It went on to win three Excellence Awards; an unprecedented sum for a first-year organization. Global Languages was awarded the Pyramid Award for Student Organization of the Year and the Walter G. Bryte Achievement Award, and Andrew Brown was awarded the Baer Award for Individual Excellence.
