Marvin Center Operating Policies

The following policies govern the behavior of patrons visiting the Marvin Center. Copies of these policies can be obtained from Concierge, located on the 1st Floor and Marvin Center and University Conferences (MC 204).


Building Access Policy
The Marvin Center is open during the following hours: Sunday-Wednesday: 7am-12am and Thursday-Saturday: 7am-2am. These hours are subject to change during holiday periods and over semester breaks.

For the safety and comfort of all Marvin Center visitors and staff, as a privately owned building, the following policy governs access to the facilities of the Marvin Center:

Admittance Criteria

  • GWorld Card holders
  • Guests or visitors to the building should be entering the building to use one or more of the services provided, use of retail outlets or attending an appointment, event or conference.

    Rules
  • Individuals under the influence of illicit drugs and/or alcohol are not permitted in the Marvin Center.
  • The Marvin Center in conjunction with the University Police Department reserves the right to remove any individual if they consistently interfere in the normal function and services of events, offices and staff.
  • Individuals not employed by the University claiming to be University employees via dress or word are subject to barring from the Marvin Center.

    Late Night Access-Any access outside of normal building hours, (7am-12am Sun-Wed and 7am-2am Thurs-Sat)
  • Late night access is granted through the lower level H Street entrance.
  • Individuals with a valid GWorld card are required to check-in with the University Police Officer posted at the H Street entrance.
  • Individuals without a valid GWorld Card must provide valid government issued ID and either be accompanied by a holder of a valid GWorld card or be attending an event in the Marvin Center and must check-in with the University Police Officer posted at the H Street entrance. Marvin Center Staff and/or University Police have the right to refuse entry to any person not holding a valid GWorld card.


    DISTRIBUTION and SOLICITATION

    Organizations are not permitted to distribute or solicit information on any indoor or outdoor property under the jurisdiction of Marvin Center and University Conferences without reserving the appropriate space. Groups found on university property will be escorted off-campus by the University Police Department. Repeated violations of this policy could result in permanent barring from all campus property.

    ADVERTISING

    The Marvin Center has bulletin boards, easel space and elevator display space available for campus advertising. These locations are for University organizational and departmental uses only.

    General Guidelines:
  • Postings must not violate University and/ or District of Columbia safety regulations, conduct codes, alcohol policies, or other applicable University rules and regulations.
  • Postings must prominently display the name and contact information of the sponsoring GW organization or department, an approved University logo, the date of the event, and an English translation of all information included on the posting.
  • Indoor postings on bulletin boards must not exceed 11" X 17" in size.
  • Posting is limited to one posting per event on any bulletin board and must not overlay other material.
  • Postings advertising an event must contain correct event date, time, and location. Event must be scheduled and/or approved prior to posting advertisement.
  • Posting is not allowed on interior or exterior walls, floors, columns, doors, counters, trashcans, glass or painted surfaces.
  • Postings may not advertise personal messages or promote or emphasize illegal activity, drug, alcohol, sexual situations, or sexual innuendo.

    Stantion Space Guidelines:
  • Stantions are permitted in the following locations: 5th Floor Lobby, 4th Floor Lobby, 2nd Floor Lobby, Ground Floor H Street Lobby. Stantions will not be permitted in any other area.
  • Oganizations are limited to 3 stantion spaces per week.
  • Stantion advertisements larger than 11" X 17" must have a poster board backing.
  • All stantion postings must comply with general posting guidelines outlined above.
  • Exceptions can be requested in writing and are subject to review by staff.

    Display Advertising
  • The Marvin Center has some available display advertising space available in the following locations: 1st Floor H Street Entrance and the Ground Floor Lobby.
  • Advertising in these spaces cannot exceed 8.5" X 11" and must be in potrait layout.
  • Display Advertising should be submitted to Marvin Center and University Conferences for posting pending availability and approval.

    Elevator Display Case Postings:
  • Elevator Display Cases are for the advertisement of events occurring within 7 days of the date the advertisement is posted.
  • Organizations wishing to have advertisements placed in the elevator display cases should bring 3 copies of the advertisement to Marvin Center and University Conferences for approval and posting.
  • Posting may not exceed 8 1/2" X 11".
  • Elevator postings must comply with the above stated guidelines.
  • Elevator postings should be submitted to Marvin Center and University Conferences for posting pending availability and approval.

    Bulletin Boards:
    Bulletin boards are located on the Ground Floor, the H street Stairwell, the 2nd floor lobby and throughout the 4th floor for organizations to post advertisements. All postings must comply with the posting policy outlined above.

    Display Cases:
    Display cases are located on the 4th floor for organizations to utilize for advertising. Cases are scheduled for periods of time ranging from no less than 2 weeks to no longer than 6 weeks. All materials must be contained within the display case and the organization name and contact information must also be displayed. Any materials remaining in the case when the reservation is concluded will be emptied and disguarded.

    Palm Cards:
    All palm cards distributed in any area under Marvin Center jurisdiction must adhere to the above stated posting policy. Any organization found to have littered with palm cards are subject to District of Columbia fines of up to $5.00 per palm card.

    PARKING

    Parking is always a concern in a metropolitan area. The Marvin Center does not have reserved parking for people attending or hosting events in the building, and can only assist with event parking by contacting University Parking Services.

    We encourage you to use METRO when attending event in the Marvin Center. The closest METRO stop is the Foggy Bottom/GW University stop on the Orange and Blue lines.

    A University Parking Garage is located on the bottom five levels of the Marvin Center and can be accessed on H Street, between 21st and 22nd Streets. The Marvin Center Garage closes at 12 midnight Monday through Friday. Make sure you have your car out by 11:45pm. It is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

    The University Visitor's Parking Garage can be accessed on 22nd Street between H and Eye Streets. For rates please contact Parking Services at 202-994-7275.

    PUBLIC SPACE

    Shoes and shirts are required at all times while in any public space within the Marvin Center. Groups holding events in Marvin Center rooms may remove their shoes while in their reserved event space. Exceptions to this policy should be filed in advance with Marvin Center and University Conferences.

    SMOKING POLICY

    In the interest of creating a comfortable environment in which to accommodate all guests of the Marvin Center, the Marvin Center Governing Board has declared the Marvin Center a smoke free building. Violation of this policy can result in a maximum $300.00 fine. Smoking is permitted on the 3rd Floor Terrace of the Marvin Center provided the space is not reserved for a special event.

    EVACUATIONS AND EMERGENCIES

    In times of building emergencies or evacuation please exit the building through the nearest stairwell. Stairwells are located throughout the building and are marked with illuminated exit signs.

    SPECIAL NEEDS

    The H Street and 21st Street entrances to the Marvin Center are equipped with elevators and/or ramps and automatic doors to accommodate clients with special needs. Anyone who has requests regarding special needs or if a problem occurs with any special needs equipment, please contact Marvin Center Operations (47470) or Disabilities Support Services. In case of emergency, patrons should proceed to the H Street Stairwell for evacuation from the building by trained personnel.

    DISCLAIMER

    All persons using the Marvin Center are subject to all applicable District of Columbia and Federal Laws, The George Washington University Code of Student Conduct, and Marvin Center policies. The Marvin Center maintains the right to remove, without notice, any person not in compliance with these regulations.
