What is the Licensing and Trademarks Program?Answer: The Licensing and Trademarks Program established July 1991 as the
Collegiate Licensing Program, promotes, regulates and protects the commercial
use of the University's federally trademarked names and identifying marks both
on and off campus.

Do GW departments, offices and student organizations have to obtain permission to use GW's wordmarks and logos to be used on merchandise like T-shirts, mugs, sweaters, etc?Answer: Yes! Prior permission must be obtained from the Licensing and
Trademarks Program before using any of the University's registered marks on
merchandise. This ensures protection of the integrity and identity of The George
Washington University.

I already have a design and a vendor who I want to produce my merchandise, what is my next step?Answer: Any student, faculty, student organization or administrative office that is interested in using The George Washington University wordmarks and logos must first use a licensed vendor and get the design approved by the Licensing and
Trademarks Program. A Merchandise Authorization form must be completed and
submitted with the name of the vendor selected and the artwork to the Licensing
and Trademarks Program.

I want to make sure that the vendor I am using is licensed to produce merchandise bearing GW's wordmarks. Where can I obtain a list of licensed vendors?Answer: For your convenience, a list of licensed manufacturers prepared for immediate business is available in Rice Hall Suite 403 and on our website at
http://gwired.gwu.edu/ltp5.
If the vendor I am using is an approved vendor, how can they become licensed?Answer: The vendor must go through the Collegiate Licensing Company in Atlanta, GA to become a licensed vendor. Direct the vendor to go to the CLC website at www.clc.com or contact CLC directly at (770) 956-0520 to begin the application process.

Are there any guidelines on using GW's wordmarks and logos?Answer: Yes! The Licensing and Trademarks program has developed guidelines on how wordmarks and logos must be used, which must be followed before any design is approved. Guidelines can be viewed on our website at

What is the turn around time for merchandise design approval? Answer: Designs are typically approved within 48 hours and may be submitted to Rice Hall Suite 403 or faxed to (202) 994-0475.

Can out-of-town vendors be equally as quick as local vendors?Answer: Yes, out-of-town vendors can be equally quick as local vendors. Please consult the Approved Vendor list located on our website at
http://gwired.gwu.edu/ltp for a full list of vendors.

Why must I use a licensed vendor particularly if I can get it for a lesser cost? Answer: GW requires that you use our licensed vendors to ensure product quality. Additionally, licensed vendors must adhere to Labor Codes of Conduct set forth by the University.

Does GW support Labor codes and anti-sweatshop working conditions?Answer: Yes, GW fully supports labor codes and would never advocate any human being working in factories where sweatshop conditions exist. The Licensing and Trademarks website, for your convenience, has posted both Collegiate Licensing Company's and Follet's Labor Codes of Conduct at the left.
