INFORMATION ON THE HEBREW PLACEMENT TEST

The exam is a self-placement exam for students who have prior knowledge of Hebrew. Complete beginners should not take this exam. Based on your score, you will be able to place yourself in a GW Hebrew course that is best suited for you.

GW offers two intermediate Hebrew courses each fall:
A third semester course, Hebrew 003
A fifth semester course, Hebrew 103.

This exam determines which of these courses is best suited to your language level. In order to be placed in a more advanced Hebrew course you will need to consult with the coordinator of the Hebrew program in person at the beginning of the semester.

The exam has 2 parts, PART ONE and PART TWO, and an answer sheet. The exam was designed to take about one hour. We recommend that once you begin the exam you should continue to work on it without interruption until you finish. If at any point during the exam you feel you cannot continue any more, please stop and check your score up to that point. After you finish, check your answers against the answer sheet in order to determine your level of Hebrew. If your score is inconclusive, you should register in a class that is closest to your score according to the key provided in the answer sheet either below or above the level you scored.

Please do not look at the questions or the answer sheet before taking the exam. In order to be placed accurately, it is important that you work independently without the help of grammar books or a dictionary.

The score:

• If you scored 30 or less, you should enroll in a first year course, Hebrew 001.
• If you scored 50 or more, you should enroll in Hebrew 003.
• If you scored 80 or more, you should enroll in Hebrew 103.
• If you had a perfect score of 88, you should consider taking a higher level Hebrew course, Hebrew 120. Please consult the coordinator of the GW Hebrew Program about it at the beginning of the semester.

Students who change their score in order to get into a course that is inappropriate for their level will not be permitted to remain in that course and may find themselves closed out of courses that better fit their language level.
