French Placement Test

Who needs to take the French placement exam?

If you have studied/spoken French, but you have not taken a language class at GW, the placement test is required! DO NOT place yourself in a foreign language class without taking the exam. This also applies to students who took the AP Test. You will not be permitted to stay in a class without proof of placement.

Directions for Online FRENCH Placement Exam:

1. Go to http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org?acct=geowu

2. Enter the Password in the BYU window when prompted.* Password: colonials1 (all lower case)

3. You will be given access to the GW Webcape site. Select French.

4. The next screen is a student survey. Please fill it out, including your student ID and e-mail address. Once you've submitted the profile, you'll be given access to the exam.

5. If, in answering questions during the test, the screen does not advance immediately to the next question, just resubmit your answer. The next question should appear. This can happen (infrequently) if the system is busy.

6. Click submit after answering the last question to complete the exam.

7. PRINT or WRITE DOWN your results after completing the exam! You must register for the level in which you were placed, or you will be asked to leave the class.

  • Students may place themselves based on WebCape results if their French score is level 10 or below (less than 600 points).
  • French students with score greater than or equal to 600, must contact the RGSLL department, 801 22nd Street, NW, Phil Hall 513, tel: 202 994-6331 They will schedule an oral interview with one of the available professors.
  • Heritage speakers (those who speak a language, but have little to no formal training in it) should schedule an oral interview, regardless of score.

Concerned about your placement result?

On the first day of class, there will be a short diagnostic to verify your placement.  After you have attended class, if you feel that your placement is incorrect, please come to RGSLL Department.  You cannot change levels without approval from the French Language Program Director. If you have any questions, please contact the Acting French Language Program Coordinator, Prof. Bradford Marshall <dbmarsh@gwu.edu>.
