Housed in three buildings on Capitol Hill, this is the largest library in the world with a collection of over 130 million items.  There is also a significant portion which is written in a language other than English.  All resources must be used in the library.

Residents of Virginia may use this library.  A picture ID with current street address is required to obtain a card which permits borrowing privileges.

Professional librarians are available in the library (Room 3000) Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You need to obtain a researcher’s card in order to access the materials and may not remove anything from the library.

 

National Library of Medicine

This is the world’s largest medical library with a collection of over 8 million items. It is located near the Medical Center metro stop on the Red Line. Materials are not loaned to individuals but you may be able to obtain an item through your local library’s interlibrary loan system.
