Health Insurance Requirement for J-1 Exchange Visitors

All J-1 visa holders are required by U.S. law to have health insurance both for themselves and for any family members that accompany them to the U.S. The health insurance must be maintained throughout the Exchange Visitor's program. The minimum coverage necessary to fulfill this requirement includes $50, 000 per accident or illness
  • up to $7,500 for repatriation of remains
  • up to $10,000 for medical evacuation to the home country
  • and a deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.
The Department of State requires that any plan, policy or contract used to meet the above requirements also meet minimum requirements regarding their claims paying abilities (for example, having an A.M. Best rating of "A-" or above, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-i" or above, or a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of B+ or above).

Failure to meet this health insurance requirement will result in a termination of J-1 or J-2 status. GW offers a comprehensive health plan that students may purchase which satisfies the legal requirement. Students and Scholars (meaning Professors and Researchers) who opt to use another health plan are responsible for making certain the health plan they choose meets the minimum coverage requirement.

Further details about the health insurance requirement are available at the ISO.
