HOVA Graduate Housing FAQs

 Where is HOVA Located?

The Hall on Virginia Avenue (HOVA) is located at 2601 Virginia, NW in DC’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood.  It is located between 27th and New Hampshire Avenues across the street from the Watergate and the Kennedy Center.

 
Is a room deposit required to reserve a space?

No.

 
How will I pay my rent?

Fees for HOVA Graduate Housing will be charged each semester to your student account.  Financial aid may be used to pay for your housing assignment.

 
Will HOVA close for winter break?

HOVA will be open during the winter break.

 
Can I bring my pet with me to HOVA?

Pets are not allowed in GW residence halls.

 
Can I smoke in my room?

Smoking is prohibited in GW buildings, including residence halls.

 
Can I bring my own furniture?

Each room in HOVA is furnished with the following:

-  1 twin bed (per resident)

-  1 dresser bureau (per resident)

-  1 desk (per resident)

-  1 desk chair (per resident)

-  A microwave

-  A Microfridge

 

CONSIDER BRINGING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:

Blankets, Sheets/Mattress Pad, Pillows/Pillow Cases, Towels/Washcloths, Alarm Clock, Telephone, Desk Lamp/Light Bulbs, Surge Protector, Waste Baskets, Wall Decorations, Calendar, Stationary/Envelopes, Laundry Supplies, Hangers, Iron/Ironing Board, Sewing Kit, First Aid Kit, Flashlight, Computer and Printer, Television/VCR/DVD player, Stereo, CDs, Bicycle/Bicycle Lock, Coffee Maker, Cups/Plates/Utensils, Dish drainer/Mat, Sponges/Washcloths, Towels, Vacuum, Mop/Dustpan.

 
Can I bring my own furniture?

You may bring furnishings with you to make your room at HOVA a “home” but please be mindful that the furniture that is in your room at HOVA will remain in the room. 

 

What household items are prohibited in GW Residence Halls?

The following items are prohibited in the residence halls. Disciplinary action may be taken if found in resident rooms. Prohibited items will be confiscated immediately and disposed of without reimbursement. This list is not exhaustive.

   - incense
- candles
- lanterns/oil lamps
- flammable liquids
- halogen lamps
- burners or objects with an open flame in non-kitchen areas
- hot plates in non-kitchen areas
- George Foreman grills in non-kitchen areas
- toasters/toaster ovens in non-kitchen areas
- microwaves or refrigerators not provided by the University
- space heaters
- live holiday decorations (tree, garland, etc.)
- Fireworks*
- weapons (including pocket knives, spears, swords, or souvenir weapons)*
- firearms (including pellet, BB, air, or paintball guns) *
- ammunition*
- explosives*
- chemical mace*
- tazers*
- drugs and/or drug paraphernalia*
- alcohol (if underage) *

Is it possible to ship my belongings to HOVA before I arrive?

DO NOT SHIP YOUR BELONGINGS TO GW.  GW cannot provide storage facilities for residence hall residents.  We cannot sign for packages for non-residents.

What types of dining options does HOVA have?
The Colonial Cash for Dining program is a flexible dining program here at GW.   Using your GWorld card, you are able to make purchases at a variety of cafe, market, grab-n-go, restaurant, gourmet prepared food, coffee, and retail venues strategically placed in the heart of campus, where students live, and at convenient off-campus dining choices in the surrounding neighborhoods.   For more information regarding Colonial Cash, please visit http://gwired.gwu.edu/gwdining/gworld_home.html.

 
When can I check into my room?

The move in date for Graduate Students is August 1, 2007.  Check-in begins at 11:00  a.m.

 

When do I have to move out?

The GW Residence Halls close for the semester on May 14, 2008.

 
Where can I park my car?

There is a parking garage underneath HOVA.  There is a fee to park in the garage.  For more information about parking, please contact Parking Services at http://www.gwu.edu/~parking/

 
Where can I find residence hall info like guest visitation policies?

The best sources for finding the policies governing the residence halls are the Residence Hall License Agreement and the Residential Community Conduct and Administrative Policies (RCCGs). Both are posted in the Housing Document section on the housing website at http://gwired.gwu.edu/gwhousing/forms/

 
Where can I pick up my mail?

Each resident will have his/her own individual mailbox. Your mailing address will look something like this:
