ELIGIBILITY

Summer housing is available to academic-year GW students attending Summer School or involved in some educationally orientated activity (e.g. internship, employment, research) for the Summer months. GW reserves the right to confirm your eligibility for Summer housing.

DATES, RATES and BUILDINGS

Dates of Stay

Summer housing is available to academic-year GW students from May 21, 2008 through August 21, 2008.  GW students who are Spring 2008 housing residents may stay continuous in housing when reserving to stay for the Entire Summer or for Summer I only.  GWU students who will be Fall 2008 residents may stay continuous in housing when reserving to stay for the Entire Summer or for Summer II only.  There is no additional cost for housing for the transition periods between Spring and Summer or between Summer and Fall for housing residents.    GWU students sign up for Summer housing based on dates that correspond with the Undergraduate Summer academic calendar.

Housing for Summer I only is from May 21 - July 5, 2008
Housing for Summer II only is from July 6 - August 21, 2008
Housing for the Entire Summer is from May 21 - August 21, 2008

Any academic year GW student who is not a Spring 2008 campus housing resident and is enrolled in Summer I courses, may request an early arrival into Summer housing on May 18, 2008 by e-mailing:  sumhouse@gwu.edu
While not every location may be available for an early arrival due to course registration, every attempt will be made to honor your request. Please understand that a reassignment may be necessary to accommodate your request.  Summer course enrollment will be verified before an early arrival request will be processed.

Rates and Buildings

Academic-year GW students will be assigned to either their FALL BUILDING or SPRING BUILDING when available.  Specific rooms in designated halls have been reserved for GW students.  Should your actual Fall or Spring room be part of these reserved spaces, and space in that unit is available, the on-line Summer housing application will offer that space to you as an assignment.  GW Housing Programs hopes to reduce the stress of moving multiple times and moving between multiple locations by seeking to place GW students in either their Fall or Spring Building as a first-choice option.

If neither your Fall Building nor your Spring Building are available, GW students will have the opportunity to rank from different building groups based on room size.

Building Group 1 rooms provide the feel of traditional dorm style living, most with common floor bathrooms. The halls in this category are: Mitchell Hall, Strong Hall (Female Only), and 2034 G Street.

Building Group 2 rooms are set up studio style as one large living space and have a private bathroom and a kitchen. The halls in this category are: Guthridge, FSK, Schenley, International House, West End and Building JJ.

Building Group 3 rooms are either set up studio style or offer bedrooms which are separate from the living/kitchen space. The halls in this category are: JBKO, Munson, New Hall, City Hall, Ivory Tower, The Dakota, and 1959 E Street.

The following buildings are not available for Summer 2008:  Thurston, Lafayette, Crawford, Madison, Fulbright, 2109 F Street, the Aston, and halls on the Mount Vernon Campus.   Greek housing locations are available through arrangements made directly through each chapter.  For more information, please proceed to the Summer housing page on Greek Housing options, located to the left.

Hall Access

Summer hall access is not placed on an academic-year GW student's GWorld Card.  Rather, GW students will be issued a Summer Courtesy Access Card on their transition day/Summer arrival day.  The electronic access device provides access to the front entrance, elevators, and stairwells of the residence hall in which the resident is housed. Residents must carry university-issued access cards and proof of identity, at all times, and present them when requested. Additionally, visitors must also show proof of identity and be escorted by residents while in the building.

Telephone and Internet Capability

All residence halls have local telephone service in each room and apartment. We recommend that residents bring their own analog telephones. Long distance service is not available through the University, but long distance calls may be placed by charging the call to a long distance credit card from a commercial long distance service, by calling collect or by charging calls to a third party. Residents will not be able to charge a long distance call to a GW telephone.

Summer Residents will also have access to services supported by Student Technology Services (STS), provided the resident’s computer meets minimum hardware requirements, including an installed 10/100 Base T Ethernet card. STS provides:
  • ResNet:  high-speed broadband Internet access that is always on, providing connection speeds up to 100 Mb per second (over 1,000 times faster than a modem dial-up connection). ResNet does not require dialing up via a phone line. ResNet users are responsible for keeping their computer fully patched and protected. Users should enable Automatic Windows Updates and run/update an anti-virus program.  Users with unprotected or infected computers may be removed from the network.
  • STS hotline with knowledgeable technicians available to answer questions and offer assistance with your connection, Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM- 7:00 PM.
  • For-fee hardware support.
Please visit the STS Web site at: http://gwired.gwu.edu/sts for more information.

      Laundry Facilities

Each hall has coin-operated washers and dryers located in either a central area within the residence hall or within the unit itself.  Machines accept quarters (residence halls do not have change machines). Summer residents are responsible for bringing their own sheets, towels, blankets, and pillows.

      Recreational Facilities

GW students will have access to the Lerner Health and Wellness Center, located at the corner of 23rd and G Streets. The 183,000 square foot Lerner Health and Wellness Center offers two gymnasia with two basketball courts each, warm-up and cool down areas, a three-lane suspended jogging track overlooking the third floor gymnasium, a three-lane lap pool that supports aquaerobics activities, a racquetball suite with four racquetball courts, two squash suites with six squash courts, and a fitness center that includes large free weight, fitness, wellness and cardiovascular fitness areas complete with sound and video systems. A large sub-dividable multipurpose room is used for aerobics, dance, martial arts and other functions. Support areas include locker rooms, family locker rooms, pro shop, equipment issue, lobby, lounge, parking and administrative areas. There is also a courtyard on the north side of the building open to the public. Please contact the Lerner Health and Wellness Center at (202) 994-1522 for further information.  Please inquire with Recreation Services about Summer hours of operation.

      Mail and Package Services

Mail is delivered to each residence hall by the Office of Mail and Package Services, located at: 2025 F. Street, NW, Washington, DC 20052. Mailbox keys or combinations will be distributed to each resident upon check-in. A $10 replacement fee will be assessed for lost mailbox keys. Mail and Package Services will sign for UPS/Federal Express packages, and will notify residents for pick up.  Packages are not delivered directly to the residence hall, but are made available at the central pick-up center, located in the same building as the Office of Mail and Package Services.  Residents in multiple occupancy rooms share one mailbox per room. Residents are asked to leave forwarding addresses at the end of the Summer. Please visit Mail and Package Services' Web site at: http://www.gwu.edu/~ais/Mail.htm for more information.

      Health & Safety Inspections

The George Washington University will conduct periodic Health & Safety Inspections in all residence hall rooms during the Summer 2008 season.  The inspection will involve examining the integrity of electrical plugs, the removal of prohibited electrical devices and appliances and other prohibited items, a visual inspection of sprinkler heads, smoke detectors, and other life safety systems, and a general assessment of storage and cleanliness of the room.

There are a number of items that are prohibited in the residence halls:  Hot plates, coffee makers, George Foreman grills, sandwich makers and the like are strictly prohibited in residence halls without private kitchens in the unit.  Although the University will not provide them, it is permissible to bring the appliances mentioned above into residence halls with private kitchens.

Candles, incense, lanterns, oil lamps, flammable liquids for cleaning, heating or any other purpose, burners (objects with open flames), halogen lamps of any shape or style and any other potentially dangerous materials are strictly prohibited in all residence hall locations.  While this is not an exhaustive list, it is intended to be representative of the prohibited items.

Prohibited items will be confiscated immediately and disposed of without reimbursement.  The University Police Department (UPD) will be contacted for items found that pose a substantial threat to person or property (drugs, weapons, explosives, etc.) and a thorough administrative search will then be conducted.

Costs associated with housekeeping necessary to clean excessively dirty/unsanitary rooms and to repair intentional damage to University property will be billed directly to Summer guests.  Additionally, all University residence halls are designated non-smoking areas and evidence of smoking in Summer guest rooms will be reported.

Disciplinary action may be taken for any health & safety violations by GWU academic-year students.  Administrative action including eviction may be taken for any health & safety violations by any Summer guest. Please visit the Office of Risk Management Web site at: http://www.gwu.edu/%7Eriskmgnt/hsinspections.cfm for more information.

      Maintenance and Repair

During the Summer, major and minor repairs are performed in all residence halls. Residents may be periodically inconvenienced by repair work performed in the buildings, hallways, and rooms. Maintenance work typically includes painting and minor carpentry, electrical and plumbing repairs. All public areas are sprayed for pest control once each month. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. Whenever possible, we will attempt to notify residents 24 hours in advance. Emergency repairs posing potential interruption of essential services or physical damage to personal or University property, must be reported for immediate repair. Most rooms, apartments, and public areas within each building will be painted. Advance notice will be given regarding the painting schedule and you may be asked to move belongings to the center of your room or apartment.

      RESERVATION INFORMATION

      Payment Procedures

      • A deposit for the amount of 50% of the total cost of housing plus a $50 non-refundable administrative fee is required with all applications. This payment will be credited towards the final bill. Please note that only VISA and MasterCard credit cards are accepted.  Summer Housing charges cannot be added to a student's University account nor can any refund due to a student from the academic year be automatically applied to cover the cost of their Summer housing.
      • Full payment is due by the Friday prior to the scheduled date of arrival.

Please note: A Summer resident may only be checked-in when the housing balance has been paid in full. Failure to make timely payments will result in forfeiture of the space.

      Cancellations

Cancellations of reservations must be submitted in writing to GW Housing Programs by completing a Summer & Conference Housing Cancellation Form. In the event that the Summer resident cancels 15 days or more prior to the scheduled date of arrival, the Summer resident will be refunded the 50% deposit minus a $400.00 cancellation fee. In the event that the Summer resident cancels less than 15 days prior to the scheduled date of arrival, the Summer resident will forfeit the 50% deposit. Administrative fees are non-refundable. If a Summer resident does not check in by noon on the Saturday of the first week of scheduled arrival, the reservation will be cancelled and any previous payments will be forfeited. If the Summer resident changes the date of arrival, and subsequently cancels the reservation, the Summer resident is still bound by the cancellation policy with their original scheduled date of arrival. Failure to notify GW Housing Programs in writing of cancellation shall result in forfeiture of any previous payments.

      Roommate Requests

Summer residents requesting space in a multiple occupancy apartment who wish to be assigned with another specified Summer resident(s) should note this on the application. Each resident requesting a roommate must submit an application. Roommate requests are not guaranteed, and are subject to space availability. GW Housing Programs cannot hold space without all applications completed. Requests must be mutual (i.e. both interested parties must indicate on their applications that they are requesting a specific roommate).

If you have multiple roommate requests, please use the following format in the provided fields of the application:

      Desired Roommates:
      Bob Smith
      John Jones

Room assignments are only valid for those who have a completed electronic application on file with GW Housing Programs. Cohabitation is not permitted. All buildings are single-sex by room. Summer housing is not provided to families or couples.

DUE TO OUR DESIRE TO MAKE HOUSING AVAILABLE TO AS MANY RESIDENTS AS POSSIBLE, WE WILL NOT ALLOW ONE SUMMER RESIDENT TO OCCUPY A MULTIPLE OCCUPANCY APARTMENT, EVEN IF THE SUMMER RESIDENT REQUESTS TO PAY FOR THE ENTIRE APARTMENT.

        Summer Staff

GW Housing Programs staff members live in the residence halls throughout the Summer months. Professional and student staff members act as university liaisons for Summer residents.  Our Summer Assistants (SA) and Lead Summer Assistants (LSA) work out of the Summer Guest Services Office in New Hall and assist individuals with check-in and check-out, providing information regarding campus and the Washington D.C. area, and acting as support staff in the residence halls. A staff member is on duty each night, and can be reached in emergency situations after regular business hours. Summer staff members will be the first to welcome you to campus and will be there to provide any necessary assistance and support throughout your stay.

        Safety and Security

The University Police Department (UPD) maintains security at The George Washington University, and works closely with the Metro Police Department, as well as other DC Police Services. UPD officers patrol campus on foot, on bike, and in cars, as well as perform regularly scheduled rounds in all residence halls on campus. The George Washington University provides various security features in its residence halls and around campus to enhance the safety of its Summer residents.  Emergency Response stations are also located throughout the campus. Summer residents can enhance these safety measures by presenting a hall access card and/or ID upon request, accompanying visitors at all times, and by not admitting anyone not personally known to the hall.

Entry to the residence halls is restricted to Summer residents and other authorized members of the University community by use of access cards. Residence halls are also equipped with security cameras in hallways and/or lobbies, and controlled access to stairwells and elevators. Summer residents are strongly encouraged to take proper precaution with personal items, including locking room doors, to ensure the security of their valuables.

University Police Department (UPD) -- Questions regarding campus security can be addressed by this department. For more information please contact UPD at 202-994-6110 or visit their Web site at: http://gwired.gwu.edu/upd/.

        University Rights, Rules and Regulations

The George Washington University reserves the right to: Enter any room or apartment for the purposes of inspection, repair, or handling emergencies; Levy and collect charges and damages for unauthorized use or alteration of rooms or apartments, equipment, or buildings and for special cleaning necessitated by improper care of rooms or equipment; Employ a collection agency to collect all balances which are not paid on or before the time of check-out. All expenses associated with use of a collection agency will become the responsibility of the individual intern/organization; Reassign residents, after timely notification, in order to accomplish necessary repairs and renovations to the building; Revoke campus privileges, including residence in its buildings, to any intern or guest whose conduct becomes, in the University's judgment, injurious or potentially injurious to the community.

        Campus Rules and Regulations

In the interest of creating a safe and positive environment in our residence halls for all Summer residents and guests, it is necessary to put forth conduct guidelines that must be adhered to by all Summer visitors to The George Washington University. Please note that any violation of the Residential Community Conduct Guidelines can result in the cancellation of your Summer Housing License Agreement. Outlined below are the violation and sanction guidelines for non-GW residents and guests: As defined in the Code of Student Conduct (Code), a GW student is "any currently enrolled person, full-time or part-time, or on continuous enrollment, pursuing undergraduate, graduate, or professional studies, whether or not in pursuit of a degree or of any form of certificate of completion." Only those residents meeting the above definition are subject to disciplinary action and to the sanctions outlined in the Code. The guidelines established in the Code and the Summer Housing License Agreement apply to all residents, however, only GW students are entitled to a disciplinary process. For all others, policy violations will normally result in a warning (for minor violations) or cancellation of the Summer Housing License Agreement (for serious and/or repeated minor violations). Cancellation of the Summer Housing License Agreement will result in removal from the residence hall or townhouse. Reports of violations of University policy received from the University Police Department and/or GW Housing Programs staff are considered factual and accurate, and are the basis for decisions rendered for non-GW Summer residents. Please abide by our policies, be considerate of other community members, and enjoy your stay with us.

        Residence Hall Rules and Regulations

Damage Fees -- Summer residents and guests have the responsibility for the care and condition of their rooms and/or apartments. Rooms will be inventoried prior to residents' arrival. Each resident is expected to sign and verify the room inventory upon arrival.  If there are any discrepancies, the newly-arrived resident is expected to report this immediately to hall staff. This will give the university staff an opportunity to rectify the situation and ensure that the resident is not charged for pre-arrival damages. Residents will be assessed for any damages occurring between the time of arrival and the time of departure.

Failure to return linens, keys, or hall access card, and damage to room and/or furnishings and equipment will result in damage fees.  Damage fees will also be levied for any damage to public areas for which the resident is clearly responsible. Charges for damage to common-use areas may be assessed and billed equally to all residents of the residence hall where the damage occurred. Each resident will be held responsible for payment of all damage assessments incurred.

Bicycles -- Residents may check with hall staff for location of bicycle parking areas. Bicycles are not to be parked in the public lobbies, hallways, or rooms of any of the residence halls.

Cooking Facilities -- Kitchens are located in each unit of the University's apartment buildings and are available for use. Kitchen utensils are not provided. These buildings are: Guthridge, JBKO, FSK, Munson, International House, New Hall, The Dakota, The Schenley, Building JJ, The West End, City Hall, Ivory Tower, and 1959 E. Street. Full cooking facilities are available in either the basement or in floor kitchens in Lafayette, Mitchell, Strong, Madison, and 2034 G Street. Kitchen utensils are not provided in these kitchens. Cooking is not allowed in student room in these buildings, except for rooms containing microwave ovens. Endangering lives by failing to comply with this regulation will result in eviction from the hall.

Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages -- In accordance with D.C. law, alcoholic beverages may not be possessed, served, or consumed by residents under the legal drinking age of 21 years. Alcoholic beverages may not be possessed, served, or consumed in any public areas of a residence hall without permission. Public areas include cafeterias, libraries, lounges, lobbies, hallways, stairways, rooftops, and any other area regularly used by the general community. Guests over the age of 21 years may drink in their rooms, but are responsible for not serving underage guests. Kegs and party balls are not permitted in the University residence halls. Violation of the alcoholic beverage policy may result in immediate eviction from the hall.

Electrical Equipment -- Each residential room is provided with a microwave and refrigerator unit. Licensees may not bring refrigerators, microwave ovens, hot plates, toasters or toaster ovens into residential properties owned/controlled by GW Housing Programs. Other appliances used for food preparation may only be used in the kitchen areas located in each hall or apartment. Approved appliances must be registered with hall staff and must be kept and used in accordance with specific regulations designed to meet fire safety standards. Electric blankets, heating pads and the like are allowed without registration. Appliances provided by the University in apartment accommodations are excluded from the registration provision of this section. Conference groups should not bring any electrical appliances to campus.

Fire Safety -- There is need for constant vigilance against the possibility of fire or other hazardous conditions in any group-living situation. Guests must assume responsibility for adherence to common-sense rules about smoking and use of electrical appliances. Fire extinguishers are provided for use in the event of small, contained fires. Any person tampering with or misusing an extinguisher will be fined $50.00 for each incident. In addition, any person initiating a false fire alarm will be evicted from the hall.

Furnishing of Rooms -- Residents are responsible for all furniture and furnishings provided by the University. Removal or disassembling of University furniture or furnishings is prohibited. Public area furniture is not to be moved into guests' rooms. Summer residents are also prohibited from bringing large pieces of furniture from home. Residents will be fined if unauthorized furniture is found in their rooms or apartments. The room or any furnishings shall not be altered without the prior written consent of Summer Housing Services.

Guests -- Residents, with the approval of all roommate(s), may have overnight guests for a period not to exceed three (3) consecutive nights in a calendar week (Sunday to Saturday) or four (4) consecutive nights over two consecutive weeks. Guest(s) are the responsibility of the Summer resident and are to be escorted at all times. Guest(s) may be asked to leave campus and/or all University property at any time by GW Housing Programs, Summer & Conference Housing staff if the guest, or the Summer resident responsible for the guest, abuses the maximum visitation above. Administrative or disciplinary action may be taken against the Summer resident whose guest(s) exhibit behavior not congruent with residence hall regulations.

Pets -- No pets of any kind are allowed in any part of any building.

Possession and Use of Illegal Drugs -- The University does not and cannot condone violations of law including violations of those laws which prescribe possession, use, sale, or distribution of illegal drugs. Summer guests should know that administrative action, up to and including eviction from the residence halls, will be taken in order to protect the interest of the University and the rights of others. Violators may also be subject to criminal prosecution.

Solicitation -- Solicitors of any kind are not allowed in GW residence halls. If solicitors are encountered in the building, residents should call a staff member or University Police at 202-994-6111 immediately.

Thefts -- All guests are expected to exercise care with their access cards and room keys, and to lock their doors every time they leave their rooms, even if it is for a short period of time. The University assumes no responsibility for loss of personal items. Guests are to report all thefts to hall staff immediately. Theft of personal and University property by residents is a violation of the law and will be dealt with by University and/or local authorities. Any type of theft, including "theft of services" is unacceptable behavior in the residence halls and will result in disciplinary action and/or eviction. Windows -- Window screens are to be left in and closed at all times. A fine of $25.00 will be levied for raising a screen and will be charged to the occupant(s) each time the screen is raised or removed. Throwing any substance, solid or liquid, out of a residence hall window is strictly prohibited. When such acts seriously threaten the life, safety, and/or property of others, violators will face eviction from the hall.
