HOUSE PROCTOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The House Proctor (HP) serves in the first-year houses and works closely with residents to help them develop an environment which encourages personal responsibility, reflection, academic growth, and self-exploration. The HP assists residents in creating an atmosphere of learning in the Residential House. To this end, the HP assists residents to build skills relating to conflict resolution, self-assessment and academic persistence. The HP also works to build a positive rapport their residents, model appropriate behavior, and assist in the development of educational co-curricular initiatives.

House Proctor Responsibilities

 

  1. Works 20 hrs per week total; 10 hrs regularly scheduled in-house to serve student needs. HPs must maintain availability for residents as a resource, providing residents with information regarding University functions and policies.
  2. Works with residents to create a culture that promotes academic growth, personal responsibility, and self-exploration.
  3. Facilitates the formation and support of Living and Learning Cohorts (LLCs) around areas of academic and social interest inventoried from residents at the beginning of the academic year. Assists in creating an experiential component in each LLC.
  4. Coordinates the administration and discussion of the first year self-assessment survey periodically throughout the year.
  5. Provides for in-house conversation and initiatives around House themes.
  6. Seeks out opportunities to work with faculty to provide mentor and lecture opportunities within the Residential House and maintain consistent communication.
  7. Serves as appropriate facilitator on building-wide groups, such as the Residential Advisory Council
  8. Returns to campus for house opening and through house closing, assisting as necessary in all appropriate opening and closing functions. Remains on campus as necessary for holiday break coverage, such as Thanksgiving and Spring breaks.
  9. Assists the Community Director in all appropriate emergency response scenarios.
  10. Participates in an on-call rotation in which the House Proctor will respond to situations as needed.
  11. Communicates on a regular basis with supervisor.
  12. Attends departmental and staff functions and scheduled in-service trainings.
  13. Performs weekly administrative tasks as assigned in addition to all other duties assigned.

Terms and Conditions of Employment

 

  1. House Proctors must be registered in a George Washington University degree-granting undergraduate program.
  2. House Proctors must have completed one full academic year prior to the time of employment.
  3. House Proctors must exhibit a strong commitment to academic rigor, intellectual discourse, and the benefit of continual self-assessment.
  4. House Proctors must be in good academic standing with the University during the term of their application and of their employment.
  5. Grade point averages will be considered for candidates. Minimum 3.0 GPA to apply.
  6. The judicial record of candidates will be considered during the application process, and when necessary will be discussed with candidates. Generally, students scheduled to be on probation during the term of employment will not be selected for employment.
  7. House Proctors are appointed for one academic year.
  8. The position is a part-time, live-in position. Thus, House Proctors are required to sleep in their campus room every night, understanding that they are allowed one weekend (or three consecutive days) off per month.
  9. House Proctors are required to return to GW prior to the beginning of fall and spring semesters to participate in staff development training and to prepare residential houses for opening.

Remuneration

For the 2007-2008 year, House Proctors received a fixed stipend of $4750, a furnished room, voice-mail and call-waiting services for the academic year. Note that remuneration is considered income and may impact your financial aid package. Candidates are encouraged to contact the Financial Aid Office at 202-994-6620 for additional information prior to accepting the House Proctor position.
