Intramural FAQ
Intramural Sports is a program designed to offer opportunities for participation in a wide variety of activities at the collegiate level. Many students have played sports at the high school or recreational level, and IM Sports affords the opportunity to stay active in sports without the time commitments or skill level of the varsity player. We offer various different leagues and tournament throughout the academic year. The sports offered are listed on the IM Sports Web site.
Any current GW student, faculty or staff member is welcome to play. Faculty and staff members that are not members of the Lerner Health & Wellness Center (LHWC) may also have to pay an additional fee.
There are three ways. You may either form your own team, join a team formed by someone else, or join the free agent list here.
To enter a team, just stop by the Campus Recreation Office in the LHWC and fill out an entry form prior to the entry deadline for that particular sport. You'll need the minimum number of players to play that sport before you can turn in an entry form. You'll need to put their names,GWID, email and phone before turning it in.
Most of the leagues and tournaments do not have an entry fee. However, occasionally events that take place outside of LHWC do require a non-refundable entry fee. Any fees are noted on the entry form of the sport.
Intramural sports provide equipment necessary to play most of its sports. Please come wearing athletic clothing and bring your GWorld card. Without your GWorld card you will not be allowed to participate.
IM sports job opportunities include supervisors, sports officials and event managers. To find out more click here.
Each team is represented by a captain, who is responsible for, among other things, attending a captains’ meeting prior to the start of each season. The full listing of rights and responsibilities of a team captain can be found in the IM Handbook.
A forfeit is when a team does not have the required number of players at game time. A first forfeit will result in a $50 fine for the forfeiting team. A second forfeit will result in immediate elimination from the league in addition to a second $50 fine. These fees are designed as a deterrent for teams to continue showing up for games even if their season isn't going as well as planned. It also offsets some of the costs we incur as we still must pay staff during a forfeit.
Payments may be made to the Campus Recreation office during regular business hours – payments by cash, check and credit card (Visa or Mastercard only). If the fine is not paid within the specified time frame (usually one week following the completion of the event or league) the captain’s student account will be charged.
If you know that your team will not be able to make the game, the Captain must call 202-994-1975 by 5pm the day of the game (or 5pm on Friday for a weekend game). We will charge you a loss but not a forfeit fee. Only the team captain may utilize this option.
League schedules are posted in IM Track. Please do not call our office to find out when your team plays as our staff has been instructed to direct you to our website.
The location of games should be noted on your schedule. Most sports are held on 4th floor of the Lerner Health and Wellness center. Outdoor events will be held either at Mt. Vernon or at a location that will be posted on the IM sports website. Some leagues are also held at the Hippodrome.
Game cancellations and postponements will be emailed to the Captain directly.
Any player ejected from a game by a supervisor or official for any reason must leave the building or playing facility immediately. If the player does not leave, the team will receive additional penalties, which may include penalties prescribed by the specific sport, and/or the game being forfeited by officials or supervisors. Any ejected player is prohibited from playing in or viewing a game until they have met personally met with the Assistant Director. It is the responsibility of the participant to contact the Assistant Director. If a player is ejected from a playoff game, the participant will be barred from competition for the remainder of the playoffs. The participant will need to be reinstated before participating in other intramural sport activities. Captains should be aware of the reinstatement procedures and assist their players in getting reinstated immediately. Suspensions CARRY OVER to the next sport, semester, and academic year if not resolved. Any team with three ejections in a season will be ineligible for playoffs.
To be reinstated you must meet personally with the Assistant Director. The Assistant Director will determine whatever action is necessary given the circumstances of your ejection, and will hand down suspensions and give you your reinstatement date.
Rules for all sports are posted online, and there are rules and captains’ meetings before each season starts to familiarize you with the rules.
