In the spring of 2007 two freshmen Alexander Sternberg and Ankit Sheth decided to teach their friends the sport and the culture that surrounds cricket. After much encouragement from their friends, they decided to bring cricket to the GW community as a whole. The following weeks included an article in the GW Hatchet highlighting their aspirations to bring cricket to GW. With the influx of publicity, the group started to gain more attention on campus and decided to make GW Cricket a student organization the following semester. GW Cricket became officially recognized with the school in the Fall of 2008. Many domestic and international students joined in the fall which allowed GW Cricket to have a core group of people. Currently the team consists of people from UAE, Pakistan, India, Israel, America, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia. They practice twice a week in either the National Mall or the Smith Center while competing in the Washington Metro Cricket League. The team also plays other clubs from various universities including American University.
