FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

*Have a question not listed here?  Email us at imsports@gwu.edu so we can add it to our list!!!

What are intramural sports?
Intramural Sports is a program designed to offer opportunities for participation in a wide variety of activities at the collegiate level.  Many students have played sports at the high school or recreational level, and IM Sports affords the opportunity to stay active in sports without the time commitments or skill level of the varsity player.  We offer various different leagues and tournament throughout the academic year.  The sports offered are listed on the IM Sports Website

Who plays intramurals?

Any GWU student, faculty or staff member is welcome to play.  Faculty and staff members that are not members of the Lerner Health & Wellness Center may also have to pay an additional fee.  Sorry alumni, you are not permitted to participate.

How can I get on a team?
There are three ways.  You may either form your own team, join a team formed by someone else, or join the free agent list here.

How can I start a team?

To enter a team, just stop by the Campus Recreation Office in the Lerner Health and Wellness Center and fill out an entry form prior to the entry deadline for that particular sport.  You'll need the minimum number of players to play that sport before you can turn in an entry form (i.e 3 on 3 Basketball needs at least 3 players to start).  You'll need to put their names and GWID on the back of the form before turning it in.

Do I have to pay?

Most of the leagues and tournaments do not have an entry fee.  However, occasionally events that take place outside of LHWC do require a non-refundable entry fee.  Any fees are noted on the entry form of the sport.

What do I need to be able to play?
Intramurals provide equipment necessary to play most of its sports.  Please come wearing athletic clothing and bring your GWorld card.  Without your GWorld card you will not be allowed to participate.

Can I work for intramurals?

IM sports job opportunities include supervisors, sports officials and event managers.  For a full list of IM sports jobs, see the Jobs Page.  This page is also accessible from the main IM sports website if the link does not work.  Please feel free to stop by the Campus Recreation office or email and enquire as to the availability of jobs.

What is a team captain?

Each team is represented by a captain, who is responsible for, among other things, attending a captains’ meeting prior to the start of each season.  The full listing of rights and responsibilities of a team captain can be found in the IM Handbook

What is a forfeit?

A forfeit is when a team does not have the required number of players at game time.  A first forfeit will result in a $50 fine for the forfeiting team.  A second forfeit will result in immediate elimination from the league in addition to a second $50 fine.  These fees are designed as a deterrent for teams to continue showing up for games even if their season isn't going as well as planned.  It also offsets some of the costs we incur as we still must pay staff during a forfeit.

Where do I pay my forfeit fee?

Payments may be made to the Campus Recreation office during regular business hours – payments by cash, check and credit card (Visa or Mastercard only).  If the fine is not paid within the specified time frame (usually one week following the completion of the event or league) the captain’s student account will be charged.

What if I know my team can't show up next week?

If you know that your team will not be able to make the game, the Captain must call 202-994-1975 by 5pm the day of the game (or 5pm on Friday for a weekend game). We will charge you a loss but not a forfeit fee. Only the team captain may utilize this option.

Where can I find my team’s schedule?

League schedules are posted on our website.  Please do not call our office to find out when your team plays as our staff has been instructed to direct you to our website.

Where do we play?

The location of games should be noted on your schedule.  Most sports are held on 4th floor of the Lerner Health and Wellness center.  Outdoor events will be held either at Mt. Vernon or at a location that will be posted on the IM sports website.  Some leagues are also held at the Hippodrome.

How can I find out about game cancellations and rescheduling?

Game cancellations and postponements will be posted on the IM Sports website

What happens if I am ejected?  Suspended?

Any player ejected from a game by a Supervisor or Official for any reason must leave the playing area immediately.  If the player does not leave, the team will receive additional penalties, which may include penalties prescribed by the specific sport, and/or the game being forfeited by officials or supervisors.  Any ejected player is prohibited from playing in or viewing a game until they have met personally met with the Assistant Director.  It is the responsibility of the participant to contact the Assistant Director.  If a player is ejected from a playoff game, the participant will be barred from competition for the remainder of the playoffs.  The participant will need to be reinstated before participating in other intramural sport activities.  Captains should be aware of the reinstatement procedures and assist their players in getting reinstated immediately.  Suspensions CARRY OVER to the next sport, semester, and academic year if not resolved. Any team with three ejections in a season will be ineligible for playoffs.

How do I get reinstated?

To be reinstated you must meet personally with the Assistant Director.  The Assistant Director will determine whatever action is necessary given the circumstances of your ejection, and will hand down suspensions and give you your reinstatement date.

What are the policies regarding injuries?

The LHWC building will provide ice when necessary, and a first aid kit is on hand.  If the situation requires it, EMERG will be called.

Where can I find the rules for my sport?

Rules for all sports are posted online, and there are rules and captains’ meetings before each season starts to familiarize you with the rules.

Who do I contact with questions?

Email questions to imsports@gwu.edu , or stop by the Campus Recreation Office (LHWC).

What is the registration deadline for my sport?

Registration deadlines are posted online, and also are included on registration forms for each sport as well as the Fall Intramural Sports Schedule.

When does my sport begin?

Start dates for all sports are online, and on the registration forms.
