Rules & Conduct

All users of the Lerner Health and Wellness Center are expected to be responsible, courteous, and safety conscious at all times. Disorderly conduct, abuse or misuse of the facility or its equipment, or disregard for the HWC's policies will not be tolerated. Violators may be requested to leave the facility, and may be subject to disciplinary action.

Violators of the above policy may also be suspended from using the facility as determined by the Assistant Athletic Director For Facilities & Operations. Fee paying members who are suspended will not have any portion of their fees refunded.


General Rules

In an effort to ensure an enjoyable experience for all members, please adhere to the following Center rules:

  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Please utilize lockers on the lower level for storage of all items.
  • No food or beverages in any activity areas and/or locker rooms.
  • Report all injuries to the Control Desk immediately.
  • When using the jogging track, run clock-wise on even numbered days of month. Run counterclockwise on odd numbered days of the month.
  • Due to safety considerations, only scheduled recreational activiities will be permitted.
  • Smoking, tobacco and gum are prohibited.
  • Appropriate shoes and attire required as specified in activity areas.
  • Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller blades and roller skates prohibited.
  • Animals are not allowed, except guide/aid animals accompanying individuals with visual or hearing disabilities.
  • When a blood-related injury occurs, halt activity and notify HWC staff immediately to administer treatment and activate biohazardous clean-up procedures.
  • Announcements, fliers, posters, etc. are limited to the signage kiosk on the exterior of the HWC; otherwise, all signage must be approved by HWC staff. (See Operations offices)
  • Spirited competition is encouraged; however, abusive language, fighting, and/or inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.

Racquetball/Handball Court Rules

  • Court for raquetball, handball, and wallyball play only.
  • Non-marking athletic shoes required.
  • Racquet frame must have protective guard.
  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Please utilize lockers on the lower level for storage of all items.
  • Reservations may be made one day in advance.
  • All players must check in at Equipment Issue before playing.
  • Reserved court time will be forfeited after 15 minutes.
  • Reservation must be made in the name of two persons.
  • Courts may not be claimed unless two or more people are on hand, ready to play.
  • The walleyball nets must be set-up and taken down by HWC staff only.

For your safety, HWC staff recommends you:

  • Eye guard protection is strongly recommended for use on Racquetball/Handball courts.
  • No more than 4 persons allowed on the court at one time for racquetball or handball, no more than eight for walleyball.
  • Wear racquet wrist strap.

Pool Rules

  • Swimming is only permitted when a University Lifeguard is on duty.
  • Bathing suit required. Cut-off shorts are not permitted.
  • Children under 16 years of age must be supervised by a parent/guardian/teacher/coach on the deck.
  • Showers must be taken prior to entering the pool.
  • Liquids in closed, resealable plastic containers are allowed.
  • All other drinks, food and glass are prohibited.
  • When more that 2 swimmers are in a lane, laps must be "circle swim" counter clockwise.
  • Individuals having skin lesions; mouth, nose or ear discharges; or any other communicable disease may not use the pool without written permission from a medical professional.
  • No electronic equipment may be brought into the pool area.
  • Swimmers needing steps or the handicap lift take precedence in those lanes.
  • No rafts, bodyboards, inner tubes or other flotation devices during free swim periods.
  • Please dry off before leaving the pool area.

PROHIBITED:

  • Street shoes on pool deck.
  • Running or rough play.
  • Hanging on lane ropes.
  • Diving into shallow water or areas marked "NO DIVING".
  • Back dives or flips from edge of pool.

Locker Room Rules

  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Patrons must utilize lockers for storage of all items.
  • HWC staff is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.
  • Use bathing suit dryer before stringing suit in locker.
  • Return towels to Equipment Issue.
  • Please dry off before exiting locker room area.
  • Upon closing time, any locks remaining on day use lockers will be cut off and items will be stored at Equipment Issue in accordance with HWC policy. HWC is not responsible for items not claimed within one week.

Lockers for Day Use Only

  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Patrons must utilize lockers for storage of all items.
  • HWC staff is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.
  • Upon closing time, any locks remaining on day use lockers will be cut off and items will be stored at Equipment Issue in accordance with HWC policy. HWC not responsible for items not claimed within one week.

Sauna Rules

CAUTION: Persons with medical conditions should consult a physician before using this room.

  • Bathing suit required.
  • Individuals must shower before using sauna.
  • Shower after using sauna and before entering pool.
  • No newspapers, magazines, or paper products are permitted in sauna.
  • Wear, or sit on towel to protect wood from perspiration.

For your safety, HWC staff recommends you:

  • Allow a 5 minute cool down period following exercise and before entering sauna.
  • Limit your exposure to 10 minutes per sitting.
  • Allow a 5 minute cool down period after exiting sauna.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after using sauna.
  • Remove all jewelry.
  • Do not put water on Sauna heater.

Steam Rules

CAUTION: Persons with medical conditions should consult a physician prior to using this room

For your safety, HWC staff recommends you:

  • Allow a 5 minute cool down period following exercise and before entering steam room.
  • Limit your exposure to 10 minutes per sitting.
  • Allow a 5 minute cool down period after exiting steam room.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after using steam room.
  • Remove all jewelry.

Fitness Room Rules

  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Please utilize lockers on the lower level to store all items.
  • Closed-toe athletic footwear required.
  • Appropriate athletic wear required at all times. (See HWC policies and procedures)
  • Unaltered T-shirts must be worn at all times. Tank tops or any shirt that has been altered in any way is not allowed! The shirt must completely cover the upper torso.
  • Water and sports drinks in closed, resealable plastic containers are permitted.
  • All other drinks, food and glass containers are confined to the lounge or plaza areas.
  • Equipment must be wiped down after each use!
  • Limit your workout to 30 minutes per cardiovascular exercise piece when others are waiting.
  • Leaning on consoles is prohibited. Use handrails for balance only.
  • HWC staff reserves the right to inform patrons how to use equipment properly.
  • For your safety, please: Report maintenance problems or other facility problems to HWC staff.

Weight Room Rules

  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Please utilize lockers on the lower level to store all items.
  • Closed-toe athletic footwear required.
  • Appropriate athletic attire required at all times. (See HWC policies and procedures)
  • Leaning weights or bars against the walls, pillars, or mirrors is prohibited. All weights must be replaced on racks!
  • Dropping/Slamming weights is prohibited.
  • Allow others to work-in between sets.
  • Equipment must be wiped down after each use!
  • Dumbbells and weight plates should be replaced on racks or machines after use.
  • Please do not move any plate-loaded machines or equipment benches.
  • No standing on equipment.
  • HWC staff reserves the right inform patrons how to use equipment properly.
  • Violation of HWC rules, policies, or the GW Code of Student Conduct may lead to removal from the facility, loss or suspension of HWC privileges, and/or other appropriate behavior.

For your safety, you must:

  • Use Spotters.
  • Use collars and pins to secure weights.
  • Report maintenance problems or other facility problems to HWC staff.

Multipurpose Rules

  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Please utilize lockers on the lower level to store all items.
  • Appropriate athletic attire required at all times.
  • Non-marking footwear required.
  • Water and sports drinks in closed, resealable plastic containers are permitted.
  • All other drinks, food and glass containers are confined to the lounge or plaza areas.
  • Personal hand weights are not allowed. Hand weights will be provided for appropriate classes. Hand weights may only be used at the direction of the instructor.

Squash Court Rules

  • Court to be used for squash play only.
  • Non-marking athletic shoes required.
  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Please utilize lockers on the lower level to store all items.
  • Protective eyewear is recommended.

Gym Rules

  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Please utilize lockers on the lower level to store all items.
  • Non-marking athletic shoes required.
  • No dunking or hanging on rims.
  • No Spitting, please use cuspidors.
  • Gum is prohibited. Please dispose of gum in waste baskets.
  • No shooting on baskets used during full court games.
  • No storing equipment or personal belongings on baskets.
  • No sitting on baskets.
  • Playing or shooting basketball is not allowed when any part of the volleyball or badminton systems are set up.
  • The volleyball and badminton systems must be set-up or taken down by HWC staff only.
  • No one is allowed to strike the protective mats on the columns or wall for any reason.
  • Fighting, abusive language, or disorderly conduct will not be tolerated.

Track Rules

  • Personal belongings, gym bags, backpacks, etc., are not permitted in hallways, lobbies, or activity areas. Please utilize lockers on the lower level to store all items.
  • Run/Walk clockwise on even days and counterclockwise on odd days.
  • Proper athletic footwear required. (See HWC policies and procedures)
  • Stretching allowed in designated area only. Do not stretch on track.
  • Give right of way to passing runners/walkers.

For your safety, HWC staff recommends you:

  • Watch for runners/walkers as you enter the track.

Free Play Basketball

  • All games, full court and half court, end at 9 points, straight; one basket
  • equals one point, winning is by one point.
  • Spectators are not permitted to interfere in the game in progress in any way, such as shooting at the opposite basket during a game.
  • No Dunking.
  • The next game is determined by calling "winners" or "next." The person calling "winners" or "next" must remain at the court and cannot shoot or play at another basket.
  • Players on the losing team may not play in the following game if there are five or more people waiting in the gym to play.
  • If the number of players in the gym amounts to 10 people per basket the HWC reserves the right to stop full court play in favor of half court games.
  • Inappropriate behavior or abusive language may result in teams or individuals being asked to leave the court or the HWC.
  • The above rules are suggested guidelines. However these rules will be enforced upon request. If you need assistance please contact a building manager at the Control Desk.
  • Any player who is cut or bleeding must stop playing. Please contact a Building Manager at the Control Desk for any injury.
  • Winning team must relinquish court after 3 consecutive wins.
