The SKA-DC is a George Washington University co-ed student club, affiliated with Shotokan Karate of America, a national nonprofit organization teaching traditional Karate-do in the United States since 1955. In the club we practice basic karate techniques (kihon), pre-arranged forms (kata), and fighting drills (kumite), as well as the proper etiquette and attitude for practicing this martial art. The aim of our practice is to develop discipline, courage and humility, in order to improve our character and our quality of life, while learning self-defense skills. We do not compete against other universities or clubs, but students do have an opportunity to attend Special Training sessions at other universities. Special Trainings are semi-annual, intensive practice sessions (3- 4 days in length), where students the have the opportunity to train with a large number of members of all ranks from many other clubs in the U.S. practicing within our style.
