Housing Descriptions
GW Housing Program's residential house system converts traditional residential halls into theme-based houses, which focus on providing academic readiness and character development opportunities. For the 2009-2010 academic year, housing at GW allows first-year students the opportunity to increase out-of-classroom learning in one of nine houses:
Culture and Arts House at Mitchell and Strong Halls Residents of the Culture and Arts at Mitchell and Strong will have the unique opportunity to live in a residential artistic community where their talents and interests can flourish alongside the talents of their housemates. Areas of culture and art explored in this house include visual arts, creative writing, performing arts, culinary art, art history, ethnic diversity and cultural exploration. Screenwriting, sculpture, photography, acting, dance, cooking, playing musical instruments or singing would all be activity interests that would be grouped with this house.
The Humanities and Sports Studies House at Madison The Humanities and Sports Studies House at Madison gives students a chance to explore the human condition through a variety of lenses. Literature and languages, history, theology and philosophy, psychology and sociology, sports studies, and American studies are some of the disciplinary subjects that unify students in this House towards an exploration of human interaction with each other and with the world around us.
The Politics and Public Policy House at Thurston In a setting situated just four blocks from the White House, the Politics and Public Policy House at Thurston provides first-year students with the opportunity to engage their interests in politics through lobbying, debate, law and campaigning. Students with a co-curricular interest for these systems and people behind the authority and power of politics will thrive in this environment.
Global Perspectives and Diplomacy House at Potomac The Global Perspectives and Diplomacy House at Potomac House provides students with an interest in exploring multicultural issued and tackling global affairs the forum necessary to support their interest in the areas of international law, cultural studies, international affairs and peace and justice studies. Students with a co-curricular passion to operate on the world stage will thrive in this environment.
The Science Village at Mount Vernon The Science Village at Mount Vernon provides students compelled by scientific exploration the chance to delve into the areas of earth sciences, bioscience and medicine, mathematics and engineering, and computer science. First-year students in the Science Village can have rewarding hands-on experiences that provide the chance to grapple with and create innovative solutions for scientific and technological challenges. The Media and Public Affairs House at Somers The Media and Public Affairs House at Somers allows students with interests in both journalism and public affairs to assemble under one roof to engage with the ever-changing global society. With the thematic cohorts in journalism, mass communication, public relations, and public affairs, first-year students that are eager to make an impact of hone their entrepreneurial interests will love to call Somers their home.
Education and Public Service House at Thurston The Education and Public Service House at Thurston Hal offers students the opportunity to engage in discussions and activities centered on three pillars: service learning, civic participation and activism and educational policy and planning. Activities that correspond with this houses theme include community service, the development of educational policy, education legislation reform, tackling the achievement gap and volunteering in after school mentoring programs.
Honors and Engineering House at Lafayette Hall
Business and Entrepreneurship House at Crawford The Business and Entrepreneurship House at Crawford allows students with interest in the corporate world and entrepreneurship to explore the challenges of the global business environment. Because business skills are valued throughout society and are central to students’ professional success, the Business and Entrepreneurship House challenges students to begin shaping their future in business now.
Sustainability and Environmental Education House at 2034 G Street The Sustainability and Environmental Education House is a place where student innovators of environmental development can meet, discuss, debate, and implement the great ideas to come. This community is for students who share an interest in learning and carrying out the University's mission of a more sustainable environment.
