Notetaking Services

Students

Students may obtain a Notetaking Request Form from the DSS office and are responsible for meeting with faculty during the first week of class to request assistance with acquiring a notetaker. Once the professor has made an announcement and obtained the name of at least one potential notetaker, students should return the completed form to DSS. A DSS staff member will contact the student with instructions for receiving class notes.

Students registered with DSS are expected to participate fully in managing their notetaking services throughout the semester. Please notify us with any changes or problems with your service. This service is not a substitute for class attendance. Frequent non-disability related absences may result in a suspension of the service.

Faculty

Faculty assistance with acquiring a notetaker for the student is vital to his/her education.  The will be expected to meet with you during the first week of class.  We ask that you announce to your class the need for a notetaker and identify up to three potential notetakers on the reverse side of this form.  Please do not identify the student by name in your announcement; it is critical that student confidentiality be maintained.  The following statement can serve as a model announcement:

"Disability Support Services is seeking an individual with strong notetaking skills to provide legible and thorough notes for a fellow student who has a disability.  Notetakers will receive a $50 gift certificate to the GW Bookstore in appreciation for their service.  Interested students should see me after class to sign up."

Notetakers

Notetakers should provide their contact information on the reverse side of the Notetaker Request Form.  You will be contacted shortly by a DSS staff member with further instructions.  Approved notetakers will be expected to submit class notes once a week by noon Friday.  In appreciation, notetakers will be compensated with a $50 gift certificate to the GW Bookstore at the end of the semester.
