The Julius Fleischman Scholarship

Applicants and parents are welcome to contact us with any questions. We will do our best to assist you in facilitating the application.

The Julius Fleischman Scholarship for Blind or Visually Impaired Students was established by a gift from Julius Fleischman to assist students who are legally blind. It is hoped that the scholarships given by the Julius Fleischman Foundation for the Blind and Visually-Impaired will help students in the future to be able to manage their conditions and enhance their opportunities for advancement.

The Julius Fleischman Scholarship is awarded annually. The number of scholarships and the amount of each award are determined each year.

Applicant Eligibility

Undergraduate students who are legally blind as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and who are registered to receive services from the Office of Disability Support Services are eligible for the Julius Fleischman Scholarship. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and full-time students at GW.

Scholarships will be awarded based on merit and need; although financial need is strongly considered when selecting a recipient, it may not be the sole deciding factor. Scholastic excellence, opportunity for career advancement, or other notable circumstances may be considered.

Students who wish to apply for this scholarship must complete a detailed application, available at the DSS office (Marvin Center, Suite 242). Previous Julius Fleischman Scholarship recipients are eligible to re-apply for subsequent awards.

Applicants must submit a complete application including:

  • Financial aid statement
  • Letter of application
  • Certification of disability
  • High school or college transcript

Applications must be postmarked no later than May 31. Recipients will be selected by the Julius Fleischman Scholarship Committee.
