GW Campus Housing

The University does its best to accommodate the living arrangement of students with disabilities. GW Housing Programs Staff (including Community Directors and House Proctors) are sensitive to the needs of students with disabilities and will give prompt assistance in case of emergency.

Accessible housing for undergraduate students with disabilities is available in both traditional and apartment style residence halls. The University will add appropriate furnishings to any assigned room or apartment to assist in convenience and to assure safety.

Note: Students who require attendant care are responsible for arrangement and payment for services.

 Evaluation of Housing Requests

A student’s condition must first meet the general eligibility criteria to request any accommodations as a student with an ADA recognized impairment (see DSS Documentation Guidelines). The review of significance of the impairment to merit consideration for a need-based housing assignment as an accommodation further incorporates the following questions:

  1. Is the impact of the condition life threatening if the request is not met?
  2. Is there a negative health impact if the request is not met?
  3. Is the request an integral component of a treatment plan for the condition in question?

Students are advised to proceed with the routine housing selection process while this is in review. Residence halls offer a number of amenities that suggest needs associated with many conditions may be naturally addressed.
