Barbara Jackman Zuckert Scholarship for Blind Part-time Students

Applicants and parents are welcome to contact us with any questions. We will do our best to assist you in facilitating the application.

A scholarship fund was established by Barbara Jackman Zuckert in 1985 to assist visually impaired or blind students seeking a higher education at The George Washington University. It is the goal of this scholarship to encourage enrollment of visually impaired or blind students (especially those pursuing
studies part time) by extending financial assistance when other sources of support are not available.

The first scholarship was awarded for the 1986 spring semester and has been awarded annually thereafter. The scholarship has been extended to students with print disabilities such as dyslexia. Scholarship may equal the tuition of one or more courses and related expenses. The scholarship amount available will be announced each year.

Applicant Eligibility

Students with print disabilities who are enrolled, in good standing, or who have been accepted for admission at The George Washington University are eligible to apply for the Barbara Jackman Zuckert Scholarship. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must demonstrate that no other resources are available to address their particular needs. Areas of need include that which facilitates academic endeavor directly or indirectly, such as books, tapes, devices, services, specific disability-related expenses, transportation, etc. The specific need for which the award money is to be used must be detailed in the award application.

Although financial need will be the most strongly considered factor in selecting a recipient, it may not be the sole deciding factor. Scholastic excellence, opportunity for career advancement, or other notable circumstances may be considered.

Any student meeting eligibility requirements can be selected as a recipient of the Barbara Jackman Zuckert Scholarship. However, students pursuing studies part time will be given the strongest consideration. Previous Barbara Jackman Zuckert Scholarship recipients are eligible to apply for subsequent awards. More than one recipient may be selected during a given year.
