On-Campus Parking Restrictions Policy

Parking Restrictions on Campus

Due to the limited number of parking spaces on the streets around campus and the availability of public transportation, students are generally discouraged from bringing vehicles to campus. Freshmen and Sophomores living in the Foggy Bottom/West End area particularly should not bring vehicles to campus. For those few granted exceptions by the University, the University will arrange for parking in University parking facilities.

METRORAIL AND METROBUS

The Metrorail is a subway system that serves the metropolitan Washington Area with over 80 stations located in Washington, Northern Virginia, and Southern Maryland, including the Foggy Bottom / George Washington University station on the corner of 23rd and I Streets, NW. The Metrorail system operates 7 days a week, and is open from 5:30 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, and 8:00a.m. until 12:00a.m. on Sunday. Fares range from $1.10 and $3.25 depending on the time of day (rush hour) traveling and the distance of the trip. For more information about the Metrorail system, including fares, maps, and timetables, visit the Metrorail web-site at www.wmata.com/riding/riding_metro.cfm.

The Metrobus system is a public bus system that also serves the metropolitan Washington Area. Metrobus fares are $1.10 for regular routes and $2.00 for express routes. For more information about the Metrobus system, including bus stops, maps, and timetables, visit the Metrorail web-site at www.wmata.com/metrobus.

The SmarTrip pass is a permanent, rechargeable farecard that works much like a debit card system. Instead of inserting a paper farecard through the faregate slot, you simply touch the SmarTrip card to the circular target panels on top of Metrorail station faregates. A card may have a maximum of $200 in value, which means that you can last a long time in between recharging. Not only is this more convenient when you are travelling but by registering the card, you would not lose all of your credit if the card is misplaced or lost. For a $5 fee to replace the card itself, SmarTrip will issue you a new card with the value on the lost card at the time you notified them it was lost. For more information on the SmarTrip system, visit the SmarTrip web- site at www.wmata.com/riding/smartrip.cfm.
