The hazing policy applies to all student groups and organizations of The George Washington University.
Hazing is defined as:
Any action taken or situation created intentionally, with or without
consent, whether on or off campus, to produce mental or physical
discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities and
situations include, but are not limited to: paddling in any form;
creating excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; quests,
treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips, or any other such
activities carried on outside the confines of the house or
organization; publicly wearing apparel that is conspicuous and not
normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery;
morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other
activities which are not consistent with the academic mission of the
University. Groups will be held responsible for the actions of their
members including pledges, associates, and any other pre-initiates.
1. The negligence or consent of the student/participant or any
assumption of risk by the student/participant is not a defense to an
action brought pursuant to this policy.
2. It is the responsibility of every member of the University
community who has knowledge of a hazing incident to report it
immediately to the Office of Student Judicial Services or the Office of
Greek Affairs.
3. Because of the nature of the relationship between a student
group/organization and the individual(s) who may have been subjected to
hazing, the adjudicating officer or body, not the alleged victim(s),
will determine whether the action taken or situation created violated
University policy.
4. Hazing charges will be investigated and adjudicated in
accordance with and utilizing the range of sanctions of the
University's Code of Student Conduct.
5. Faculty and alumni advisors and the national/international
headquarters of any organization may be notified in cases of alleged
violations of this policy.
6. The officers, primarily the president or chairperson, of each
student group/organization are responsible for informing members
(pledges, associate members, affiliates, guests) of the hazing policy.
The policy should be read by the president or chairperson to the
membership at the first meeting of each semester.
7. University action does not preclude additional action taken
by the group/organization itself or by the national/international
headquarters of the group/organization, nor does action by a Greek
chapter or national/international headquarters or IFC/NPC/NPHC preclude
University action.
