Who can I talk to about dealing with anger?
If the suggestions presented in this module do not help you manage your anger more effectively or if you have a serious anger management problem, it may be beneficial for you to speak with a counselor or therapist about your anger. Many counselors and therapists have experience with helping individuals to better manage angry feelings. There are several ways to find a counselor or therapist in your area.
1. If you are a college student, please contact your university counseling center. They should be able to provide you with counseling or with referrals to professionals in the community.
2. If you are away from your university or are no longer in school, check with a nearby university or college counseling center. Most have lists of local mental health professionals and can provide referrals.
3. Many cities and counties have community mental health centers that provide a variety of services. These organizations can provide individual counseling and may have anger management groups or workshops.
4. It is also possible to find a counselor, therapist, or psychologist by looking in the yellow pages. Individuals listed there may work with anger management or may refer you to other professionals who specialize in this area.
The most important step is to find someone who can help you feel more in control of your anger. Talking with someone can help prevent situations that are dangerous and harmful to you and to those around you. Counseling can also help you feel better about yourself and enhance your skills in communicating and relating to others.
