Confused by technical terms and complex concepts
|
Remember
the first time that you tried to read a computer manual or program?
There were words and ideas that you had never heard of before. Well
guess what, every discipline has created its own language to explain
its special concepts. Then it gets even more difficult -- that
conceptual language is combined to form even more complex ideas!
- Trouble
with technical terms typically arises from a weak understanding of
earlier or more basic concepts. Go back a few pages and see where the
ideas being discussed were first encountered. Look for bold faced type,
text boxes, formulas, or examples/illustrations to help you to
understand the foundation of your current material.
- Use an outline form to break a difficult concept into its component parts.
- Ask
the professor, TA, an upperclassman in the department, or even a peer
to explain the concept to you. Remember, everybody has to work with
other people in one way or another.
