Additional Hints for Recording Notes
|
- Use three-ring binders. You can punch holes in syllabus, handouts, papers and exams and insert them into the notebook.
- Number and date each page of notes.
- Abbreviations and symbols should be used whenever possible.
- Don't copy every word. Try to put the lecture in your own words.
- Use an outline format that is most suitable to you and the lecturer.
- Leave single spaces between lines and double spaces between ideas. Notes will be easier to review later.
- Listen for lecturers' cues for main ideas, e.g., repetition of
points for emphasis, enumeration of a series of points, pauses, key
words/phrases such as "consequently" or "most significantly."
- Use symbols such as asterisk or underling to highlight ideas the lecturer emphasizes.
- Copy down charts, maps, diagrams - everything the lecturer puts on the board.
