Identify Your Values
|
Here we go again. Values are also hard to define because they are so
personal. They are simply the importance that you attach to some things
so that they take priority over other things. Values are implied by the
choices that you make, and your willingness to live up to the
responsibilities of those choices.
For example: "I want to be a Doctor" implies values related to helping
others, pursuing scientific knowledge, making money, being independent
professionally, etc.... If these are your values, the implications for
your college life are obvious. Some things, like your studies, must
take priority over others.
Start with your fantasies for your life in the future: Again, where are
you working? what are you doing? who are you with? what is your
lifestyle? etc. What does that imply about your primary values?
Consider the list below. Which take priority?
| Helping Others | Pursuing Knowledge | Financial Security | | Independence | Fame | Power | | Creativity | Fitting In | Job Security | | Leadership | Excitement | Privacy | | Aesthetic Value | Practical Results | Altruistic Values | | Healthy Lifestyle | Comfortable Home/Office | Spiritual Values | | Personal Comfort/Pleasure | Relationships | Leisure Time
| | Other:_______________________ | | |
The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. It's your life, how do you want to live?
