What Do I Need to Know Before Applying to the Peer Education Program?

All Peer Educators are required to attend the semester-long, 3 credit course Psychology 198. The class meets on Fridays from 2:15-3:45pm. Once student have applied, been interviewed, and then selected for the program, students will need to register via an add form.

How Do I Become a Peer Educator?

Peer Educators are selected through a competitive application process. The application requires a resume or vita, cover letter, and completion of the Peer Educator Application, available for download here. Successful Peer Educators generally have:

An interest in mental health issues impacting college campuses

An interest in reducing stigma and providing education about mental health issues to other students

Experience and a desire to increase skills in public speaking and presenting

Involvement with other campus activities

Good listening and communication skills

A willingness to learn from and work with other students in a team-oriented atmosphere

A strong sense of responsibility and dedication

Good time and stress management skills

Although an interest in mental health issues is a requirement, being a psychology major is not. In fact, students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply as we value the perspectives of all students. Please note: personal experiences often contribute to an interest in mental health issues. While the Peer Educators engage in discussion and outreach activities about mental health issues, the program is not a substitute for therapy or mental health treatment. Peer Educators are encouraged to engage in self-care, particularly when issues dealt with in class or through outreach activities bring up personal issues.

Applications are still being accepted for review and interviews will be offered to a selected group of applicants in late April through mid-May. Cover letters should indicate the best way to contact you regarding an interview. Final decisions regarding acceptance into the program will be made in late May. Please submit hard-copy materials directly to Dr. Stephanie Burns at the University Counseling Center, 2033 K Street, NW, Suite 330 (entrance is on 21st Street). Please contact Dr. Burns via phone 202-994-5300 or email (stburns@gwu.edu) with any questions or to find out more information about the program.
