Making an Appointment
|
SCHEDULED APPOINTMENTS:
|
An initial telephone consultation can be arranged by calling 202-994-5300. Your call is very important to us. Our goal is to respond to your needs in a timely manner. Usually within 24 hours a clinician will call you at a scheduled appointment time to clarify your concerns and to determine which services would best meet their needs. Treatment recommendations may include one of our workshops, group counseling, brief individual counseling, testing, referral to open-ended counseling, or a medication evaluation. There is no fee for the initial telephone consultation.
|
|
URGENT APPOINTMENTS:
|
If you have an urgent need to speak with a counselor during hours of operation (Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm - during Winter/Spring and Summer breaks until 5pm) and cannot wait for the next available scheduled initial consultation appointment, then please inform the receptionist who will connect you with the Counselor-on-Call. The Counselor-on-Call will talk with you to gather information about the nature of your concerns and assess the appropriateness of a same-day appointment. If you have an urgent need to speak with a counselor after-hours, please call UCC 24/7 and press option#3 to be connected with the Counselor-on-Call.

Confidentiality
All UCC records and counseling services are confidential and not a part of any GW academic record. We cannot confirm or deny a student’s attendance or participation in treatment nor release information outside the UCCwithout a student's written consent. There are some limits to this confidentiality which includes emergency situations (i.e. significant risk of imminent harm to self or others) and as legally required (e.g., child abuse, court orders, etc.).
E-mail
If you are a UCC client, UCC staff may communicate with you via e-mail regarding scheduling of regular appointments if you have given us permission to do so. UCC staff will not communicate with you via e-mail regarding personal issues or concerns. If you send the UCC or a particular staff member an e-mail, please include a phone number where you can be reached so that someone can get back to you directly.
Limits to confidentiality when sending e-mail Please be aware that any information you submit via e-mail is not confidential and could be observed by a third party while it is in transit. If you are sending information you would like to keep private, we advise you to call the UCC or to stop by and speak with a counselor in person.
High Security Positions
Mental health professionals do not submit information to any outside agency (i.e. FBI, CIA, Department of Justice, etc.) without the written consent of the client. When applying for jobs in these settings, you will be asked if you have ever had professional mental health treatment. Honest disclosure is required in almost all security-sensitive employment applications. Going to a therapist is unlikely to result in a negative security clearance recommendation. Applicants will not be denied security clearance based solely on the fact they received mental health treatment. Applicants or current employees may lose their position due to either lying about their treatment history or not receiving the treatment they need which leads to their psychiatric issues creating problems on the job.
