Alcohol/Drug Services

Assessment:

Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) is an assessment/educational program provided to GW students who want to explore their alcohol use in a judgment free environment. The program is designed to help students reduce and avoid harm related to their alcohol use.

The BASICS program is a two session commitment, which typically occurs over the course of two consecutive weeks. The cost associated with the BASICS program is $75 for the first session and $50 for the second session. The first session is scheduled for 90 minutes, and the second for 60 minutes. BASICS is a voluntary assessment program and any GW student who wants to examine their relationship with alcohol is appropriate for BASICS.

BASICS may be offered to fulfill requirements when a student is EMERGed for alcohol intoxication or violates the GW Code of Conduct regarding alcohol use and is participating in the Alcohol Amnesty Program. All referrals for alcohol amnesty program participants are enforced by the Center for Alcohol and other Drug Education (CADE).

Individual counseling: The UCC provides brief, individual counseling services to students for whom it may be appropriate. The goals of each student will be unique; however, the overall mission is to provide competent services focused on reducing harm caused by alcohol use. For some students, abstinence may be the appropriate goal and for others, a healthier drinking plan focused on moderation of alcohol consumption is the answer. All interventions are informed by evidence-based treatments with demonstrated efficacy.

Group counseling: The UCC offers a 5 session psychoeducational/treatment group based on group motivational interviewing research with college students. The group, named Alcohol Got You Thinking (AGYT), consists of five rotating sessions and will run all semester during the fall and spring terms. Students may enter the group at any point in time and complete their five sessions. This is the preferred method of treatment for students who have suffered negative consequences from the over consumption of alcohol. Topics such as identifying triggers for heavy drinking, making plans for change, and developing confidence in moderating drinking behaviors are addressed. Students may elect to join the AGYT group in addition to individual counseling to address alcohol concerns.

Consultation and Outreach: UCC staff are available to provide outreach presentations and workshops regarding alcohol and other drug use to the GW community. The UCC, in collaboration with the Center for Alcohol and other Drug Education (CADE) will be offering screening during National Alcohol Screening Day this spring semester.

Referral: The UCC can provide referral services for students needing more intensive treatment and other modalities of care. UCC clinicians prepare students for such referrals and follow-up with students regarding their satisfaction with referrals in order to assure treatment needs are being met.
